Greg Martin went 5-for-5 at the plate, then threw two scoreless innings on the mound in relief to lead Saint Vincent to a 9-6 victory and a weekend sweep over the Newport News Apprentice School.
Braden Hoffer led off the first with a single for Saint Vincent, and it was the first of six straight singles to open the contest. Â
TJ Kuny and
Ben Webb loaded the bases, and
Eddie Kilkeary drove home the first run of the game. Â With the bases still loaded, Martin delivered his first hit of the day, scoring one, then
Aaron Burger hit a 2-run single to make the score 4-0. Â Later in the inning,
Matt Whittaker hit a sacrifice fly to score Martin, putting the Bearcats in front 5-0 after just a half inning.
Tyler Frankel, looking for his third win of the season, started the game on the bump for the Bearcats and kept the Builders off the board through the first two innings. Â In the third, SVC added to its lead, with Martin and Burger singling to open the inning. With one out, Whittaker singled to load the bases, and
Braden Hoffer was hit by a pitch to score Martin and make it a 6-0 game.
Saint Vincent was ahead 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth, when Mark Labrador hit a leadoff home run off Frankel, but it would be the only run that the Bearcat starter would yield on the day.
The Bearcats added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh, as
Brennan Hoffer and Whittaker walked to lead off, then
Chris Winkler hit a pinch-hit single to drive home Hoffer. Â Later in the inning, a wild pitch scored Winkler to put SVC ahead 9-1.
The Builders fought back, scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning against the Bearcat bullpen to cut the gap to just three, 9-6, before
Alex Augustine got a pair of outs to get out of the inning. Â Martin then came on to pitch the final two innings and closed the door.
Frankel improved to 3-0 on the year by working the first six innings, giving up four hits and striking out six. Â Martin struck out two in the final pair of innings. Â
Braden Hoffer went 3-for-3 on the afternoon, while Burger was 2-4 with 2 RBI. Â In all, SVC had 15 hits. Â
