PHOTO GALLERYFor the third straight game, the Bearcat baseball team used some late inning heroics to post a 4-3 victory over Westminster College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game at Bearcat Ballfield.
The Titans got off to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, scoring a pair of unearned runs off SVC starter
Dave Culeton.
Saint Vincent got on the board in the bottom of the first against Westminster's Sean Coyne, as
Luke Fox led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Ben Webb to make it a 3-1 game.
Culeton then settled into a groove, and he and Coyne battled through the next several innings, with neither team able to push any runs across the plate. Â In the 5th inning, Fox again got things started with a single. Â After he stole second and moved to third on a fly out, Webb came up with his second sacrifice fly of the game, scoring Fox to make it 3-2.
It remained that way until the bottom of the 8th, when Webb singled with one out and took second on an error on the throw back to the infield. Â An out later, pinch hitter
Joe Simsic hit an RBI single to right that plated Webb to tie the game. Â
Greg Martin then doubled deep to right center, scoring pinch runner
Braden Hoffer to give the Bearcats their first lead of the day.
After yielding a leadoff walk to start the ninth, Culeton was lifted for Martin, who got the final three outs to earn his fifth save, a new school record for saves in a season.
Culeton earned the win, moving to 2-1 on the year with two complete games. Â Fox and
Aaron Burger each had a pair of hits on the afternoon.
Saint Vincent is now 9-5 overall, 3-0 in the PAC. Â Westminster drops to 1-12 overall, 0-3 in the conference. Â The Bearcats will now enjoy a week off, returning to action with a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, March 31 against Penn State-Altoona. Â
