LATROBE, Pa. (March 25) - The Saint Vincent softball team celebrated Senior Day with a doubleheader split against the Juniata College Eagles.
Saint Vincent's offense guided them to a 9-3 win in the opener, before Juniata held on for a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
In game one, SVC staked claim to an early 2-0 lead after one. However, Juniata answered with a pair to tie the game in the top of the third. SVC then plated four runs in the bottom of the frame before adding two more in the fourth to take control. Each team scored a single run in the fifth to close out the scoring.
Shelby Noel was the offensive standout in the opener, going 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored. The junior first baseman just narrowly missed out on hitting for the cycle. Noel slugged a home run to deep right center, tallied two triples and a single in the victory.
Seniors
Breanne Wallace and
Kelsey Lineberger each added multi-hit efforts. Another senior,
Samantha Emert, scored two runs and earned her 42nd career pitching win in the circle. Emert tossed a complete game, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on eight hits in seven innings. The Rockwood, Pa. native struck out six while issuing just one walk.
Juniata jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning of game two before Lineberger gave the Bearcats a 2-1 with lead by roping a two-run double into the left center field gap to score Wallace and
Kelsey Hunter. Juniata regained the lead (4-2) with a three spot in the third. Another senior,
Adrianna Workman, slapped an RBI double to score Wallace to bring SVC within one at 4-3.
The Eagles would tack on an insurance run in the sixth, making it 5-3.
Kelly Flaherty would single and an errant throw to first would bring Wallace home to make it 5-4. Flaherty would move up to second with one out but the Bearcats could not bring her in to tie the game as Juniata held on.
Wallace and Flaherty each recorded multi-hit efforts in game two. Junior pitcher
Emily Duerr suffered the loss, allowing four runs over five innings of work.
Saint Vincent moves to 6-6 overall while Juniata sits at 5-9 for 2017. SVC is scheduled to return to action with a road doubleheader against Pitt-Greensburg on Monday, March 27. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
