The Saint Vincent softball team split a road doubleheader against crosstown rival Pitt-Greensburg in non-conference play.
UPG claimed a 1-0 victory in a low scoring, defensive game one. The Bearcats bats came alive in the nightcap, as SVC slugged past the Bobcats by a 9-1 margin.
The Bearcats lost game one by a score of 1-0, despite strong pitching from junior
Emily Duerr. Both teams had several opportunities throughout the game but UPG would use a triple and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 5th for the game's lone run.
SVC actually out-hit UPG 8-6 in the game one loss.
Breanne Wallace and
Kelly Flaherty each recorded multi-hit efforts. Wallace and
Kelsey Hunter each tallied a double in the contest.
Duerr worked six innings, allowing just one run on six hits. The lefty struck out two and walked just one.
Game two was a different story for SVC, who tallied 9 runs on 15 hits. SVC scored a run in the first when
Mackenzie Gostomski raced home on a wild pitch. UPG would tie it in the bottom of the first with a run but SVC kept the damage to a minimum in the frame.
Junior shortstop
Rachel Harenchar had the big hit of the day, hammering a three-run home run over the left field fence to give SVC a 4-1 lead in the fourth.
Samantha Emert added an RBI single in the fifth and then
Victoria Culver did the same in the sixth to extend the advantage to 6-1. The Bearcats added three more runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Flaherty had an RBI single, while Culver added another RBI hit to conclude the scoring.
Emert, the reigning PAC Pitcher of the Week, earned her fourth straight win in the circle. The senior allowed just one run in seven innings of work. Emert scattered five hits while striking out seven and walking just one.
Harenchar added a double for a multi-hit effort. Junior outfielder
Morgan Murphy went 3-for-4 with a triple. Culver, Duerr and Emert also had two hits in game two.
The split moves SVC to 7-7 overall, while UPG moves to 8-8 overall.
Saint Vincent will host Thomas More College for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 1. The contests will serve as the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener for both teams. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
