LATROBE, Pa. (April 2) - The Saint Vincent softball team was swept by visiting Thomas More in the Presidents' Athletic Conference opening doubleheader for both teams.
The visiting Saints used strong offense to take the doubleheader by scores of 11-2 and 6-1, respectively.
Thomas More scored 11 runs on 18 hits in game one to roll to the victory. The Saints scored twice in the top of the first inning, junior first baseman
Shelby Noel doubled and scored in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. However, TMC added four runs in the third and a run in the fifth to take a 7-1 advantage. The Saints put the game away with four more runs in the sixth inning, claiming an 11-2 mercy rule win over the Bearcats.
Noel was the lone bright spot in game one, going 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and run scored.
Defense plagued the Bearcats in game two, as SVC committed four defensive miscues in the contest. Two errors in the second inning allowed the Saints to get on the board first. TMC added a solo home run to take a 2-0 advantage into the bottom of the sixth inning.
That is when the Bearcats looked like they were poised for a rally. Sophomore outfielder
Mackenzie Gostomski led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore catcher
Kelsey Hunter would single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Noel would reach on a fielders choice to plate Gostomski and bring SVC within a run at 2-1. Junior
Emily Duerr would single to put the tying run in scoring position but TMC escaped the inning with the 2-1 advantage.
The Saints would then tack on four insurance runs in the top of the seventh to put the contest game of reach.
Duerr and Hunter each recorded two hits in the game two loss. Senior pitcher
Samantha Emert took the loss, allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 11 hits. Emert struck out one and issued no walks.
Saint Vincent will look to bounce back with a home PAC doubleheader against Grove City on Wednesday, April 5. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
