LATROBE, Pa. (April 5) -
Samantha Emert earned two wins in the circle to help Saint Vincent to a doubleheader sweep of Grove City College in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
Saint Vincent earned the sweep over the Wolverines by scores of 4-0 and 13-5, respectively.
Game 1 Recap
SVC claimed game one by a 4-0 score behind a dominant pitching performance from Emert. The senior tossed a two-hit shutout performance against the Wolverines, while striking out Grove City batters and walking just two.
Junior first baseman
Shelby Noel was the catalyst offensively in the opener. The Greater Latrobe, Pa. native went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, triple and three RBI in the win.
Noel helped SVC open the scoring with a RBI double to plate
Mackenzie Gostomski in the bottom of the first inning. The Bearcats would tack on an unearned run in the fifth inning to make it 2-0. Noel would then add insurance runs, smacking her PAC leading 5th triple to score Gostomski and
Kelly Flaherty.
Grove City threatened in the top of the fourth, loading the bases but Emert escaped the jam. The SVC offense collected six hits and drew seven walks in game one.
Game 2 Recap
The Bearcats offense broke out in game two, tallying 13 runs on 17 hits in the nightcap. SVC scored five in the bottom of the first inning. Flaherty would start the scoring with an RBI single.
Kelsey Hunter would add an RBI single of her own. After another run scored on an error,
Kelsey Lineberger crushed two run homer over the center field fence to make it 5-0.
The visiting Wolverines would not go quietly in game two, using a five run third inning to tie the game at 5-5. The Wolverines used two home runs in the inning to even up the score.
However, Saint Vincent answered right back in the bottom of the frame. Lineberger continued her strong showing with an RBI double to score Emert and help SVC regain the lead for good. Gostomski and Flaherty would produce run scoring hits to stretch the advantage to 8-5.
SVC would force the mercy rule by adding five runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Gostomski and Flaherty were once again in the middle of the scoring, each adding RBI hits before scoring runs as well in the inning.
Emert earned the win in game two as well, tossing 2.1 shutout innings of relief. Emert allowed just one hit and struck out one GCC hitter.
The pair of wins move Emert's record to 7-3 in the circle for the season.
Offensively in game two, six Bearcats had at least two hits. Flaherty was 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Lineberger and Gostomski each went 3-for-3 at the plate. Gostomski scored three times while Lineberger had two extra base hits, three RBI and two runs scored.
Morgan Murphy, Noel and Emert each tallied two hits as well.
The doubleheader sweep improves SVC to 2-2 in PAC play and 9-9 overall. Meanwhile, Grove City drops to 1-3 in league action and 10-8 overall for 2017.
