LEESBURG, Fla. (March 7) – The Saint Vincent softball team lost a pair of games at the annual Spring Games in Florida.
The Bearcats fell to Monmouth College from Illinois by a 6-2 score in a Tuesday morning contest before suffering a 6-3 loss to Oneonta State in the nightcap.
Game 1 – Monmouth College (Illinois)
The Scots struck first, taking advantage of a Bearcat error and then used a two-run home run to take a 2-0 lead after one.
After leaving five runners on through the first two innings, Saint Vincent tied the game with two runs in the top of the third.
Emily Duerr and
Kelsey Hunter started the rally with back-to-back singles.
An error by Monmouth helped the Bearcats load the bases with no outs.
Kelsey Lineberger brought home Duerr with an RBI single to left to make it 2-1. Pinch hitter
Samantha Emert tied the game the hard way, getting hit by a pitch to bring home Hunter.
Monmouth came right back in the bottom of the frame with an unearned run to take a 3-2 advantage.
The Scots tacked on a run in the fifth and two more in sixth to effectively put the game away.
The Saint Vincent offense left 12 base runners on base in the contest, unable to take advantage of seven hits and five walks.
Duerr and Hunter led the Bearcats with two hits each. Duerr took the loss in the circle, giving up 6 runs (4 earned) on 9 hits. The lefty struck out two while not issuing a walk.
Game 2 – SUNY Oneonta
SUNY Oneonta used four hits to scratch out a run in the top of the first inning. The Bearcats limited the damage with a nice double play off of a dropped third strike play.
After the Bearcats went down in order in the bottom of the frame, the Red Dragons took advantage of an error by using back-to-back hits to take a 2-0 advantage.
Emert helped SVC get on the board, using an RBI single to score
Shelby Noel and cut the deficit in half at 2-1. The Bearcats had a chance to add more but a lineout to deep right field with the bases loaded ended the threat.
Noel brought the Bearcats within a run (3-2) with her first home run of the season in the third inning.
Mackenzie Gostomski single handily tied the game an inning later. The sophomore singled to left and successfully stole second base. On the stolen base, the Red Dragons catcher's throw went all the way to the fence, allowing the run to score.
A walk and four straight hits in the sixth allowed Oneonta to take a 6-3 lead over the Bearcats.
Wallace and Noel each collected two hits in game two to pace the offense.
Kelly Flaherty took the loss in the circle, dropping her season record to 1-1.
The loss puts the Bearcats overall record to 2-4 for their Florida trip.
Saint Vincent wraps up its Florida trip tomorrow with a pair of games in Clermont. The Bearcats face Immaculata University at 2 p.m. before taking on Penn State Brandywine at 4:30.
