LATROBE, Pa. (April 13) -
Kelly Flaherty connected for a walk-off single in game two to lift the Bearcats to a split with Westminster College, who entered the day unbeaten in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.
The visiting Titans captured game one by a 7-2 margin before the Bearcats earned the 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
Game One Recap
The Titans jumped on the Bearcats in game one, taking advantage on an error to score three unearned runs in the top of the first inning. More shaky defense from SVC led Westminster to put up three more unearned runs in the fifth, making it 6-0. The Titans would tack on another run in the top of the sixth to stretch the lead to 7-0.
Senior third baseman
Kelsey Lineberger ripped an two-run double in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Flaherty and junior
Shelby Noel for the Bearcats lone runs in game one. Lineberger and Flaherty each recorded two-hit efforts in the game one loss.
Senior pitcher
Samantha Emert took the loss in game one. Emert allowed three unearned runs in 4.0 innings of work. The Rockwood, Pa. native struck out three and walked four.
Game Two Recap
The Bearcats played a much cleaner game in the nightcap and it helped them to victory. Saint Vincent loaded the bases in the third inning and Noel drew a walk to force home
Rachel Harenchar, giving the Bearcats an early 1-0 advantage. However, Westminster was able to escape without allowing further damage.
The score remained that way all the way until the top of the sixth inning, when the Titans used back-to-back doubles to tie the game at 1-1. Saint Vincent had a chance to regain the lead in the bottom of the frame, putting runners on first and third with just one out. However, the game remained tied as the Bearcats popped up a bunt and grounded out to end the threat.
Emert shut the door in the top of the seventh, retiring the Titans in order with two strikeouts. That presented the Bearcats the opportunity for the walk-off winner. Pinch hitter
Breanne Wallace got hit by a pitch to start the rally.
Mackenzie Gostomski reached base after an errant throw by Westminster on a sacrifice bunt attempt, which allowed pinch runner
Morgan Murphy to move all the way to third base with no outs.
That is when Flaherty recorded her fourth and biggest hit of the afternoon, a well struck line drive down the left field line to score Murphy and give SVC the victory.
Flaherty paced the offense in game two, recording another multi-hit performance, which included the game-winner. Freshman
Morgan Rittenhouse tallied the Bearcats lone extra base hit in game two with a double.
Emert earned the victory in game two, which improved her season record to 10-4 in the circle. Emert only surrendered one run in the complete game effort, while striking out eight and not issuing a walk.
The victory in game two snapped the Titans 13-game winning streak and handed Westminster its first PAC loss of the season. Titans' ace pitcher Jazmyn Rohrer suffered the loss in the circle in game two, her first defeat of the season, moving her record to 12-1.
Saint Vincent moves to 13-11 overall and 6-4 in PAC play. Meanwhile, Westminster drops to 21-7 overall and 9-1 in league action.
The Bearcats return to action with a road doubleheader at Geneva College on Wednesday, April 19. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Beaver Falls.
