BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (April 19) - The Saint Vincent softball team earned a doubleheader split with Geneva College in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.
The Bearcats fell 3-1 in the front end of the doubleheader before rallying for a dramatic 8-4 extra inning victory in the nightcap.
Senior third baseman
Kelsey Lineberger provided the only offense in game one, slugging her third home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning. The host Golden Tornadoes responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead and the victory.
Junior first baseman
Shelby Noel recorded two hits in the game one loss. Senior pitcher
Samantha Emert tallied a multi-hit effort as well in the contest, which included a double.
Emert suffered the loss in the circle in game one, allowing three runs over 6.0 innings of work. The Rockwood, Pa. native struck out three and walked three in the opener.
Geneva pounced on the Bearcats for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning in game two. Lineberger smashed her second home run of the day and team-leading fourth of the season in the second inning to bring SVC within a run at 2-1.
The Golden Tornadoes got that run back, making it 3-1 with an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning. Noel and sophomore catcher
Kelsey Hunter used back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth. Geneva quickly regained the lead (4-3) on a Lucia Fee home run in the bottom of the frame.
Down to its last three outs in the top of the 7th, the duo of Noel and Hunter came through again, smashing back-to-back triples to tie the game at 4-4. After Emert retired the side in the bottom of the inning, the game went to extra innings.
Emert started the extra inning rally with a leadoff single in the 8th.
Kelly Flaherty reached on an error before
Courtney Patterson loaded the bases with a base hit to right field. That is when Noel gave the Bearcats the lead for good, delivering a two-run single to score Emert and Flaherty, making it 6-4 SVC.
Emily Duerr added a two-run single of her own to extend the lead to 8-4.
Noel led the way in game two, going 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. The junior tallied two triples on the afternoon, which helped her establish a new single-season record for triples with seven, passing the previous mark of six set by current head coach
Nicole Karr in 2003.
Patterson, Hunter, Emert and
Rachel Harenchar all recorded two hits in the game two victory.
The split moves SVC to 7-5 in PAC play and 14-12 overall. Geneva now sits at 6-6 in league action and 17-13 overall.
The Bearcats currently sit in a tie for third place with Thiel in the PAC Standings. However, there are five teams within two games of each other for the last two spots in the upcoming PAC Tournament. The top four teams will qualify for the annual PAC Tournament.
Saint Vincent travels to Chatham University for another important PAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 22. The contests will be played at Emsworth Field in Avonworth. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
