Presidents sweep Bearcats in PAC doubleheader

The Washington & Jefferson Presidents swept the Bearcat baseball team with a pair of shutouts at Bearcat Ballfield, winning by scores of 3-0 and 9-0.

In game one, the Presidents posted the victory despite a strong pitching performance from SVC's Dave Culeton.

Culeton yielded a first inning solo home run to Nick Vento, which proved to be the game winner.  Vento added a sacrifice fly in the third, then W&J got a triple and a single in the fourth, accounting for their runs.

SVC stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the first, then never got a runner past second base the remainder of the game against W&J's Trevor Kerr (5-2).  Derek Helbing pitched the 7th inning for his third save of the season.  TJ Kuny had a pair of singles for the Bearcats.

Culeton (3-6) walked one and struck out five, going the distance and giving up 7 hits.

Starter Fred Gillespie yielded three runs in three innings in game two, and the Presidents tacked on six additional runs later in the game en route to the victory.  SVC had a hit in the first ,then had a pair of hits to lead off the second inning, singles by Bobby Finn and Eddie Kilkeary, but after that, starter Riley Groves retired 16 straight batters.  A double by Finn in the 7th provided the only other SVC baserunner in the game.

W&J is now 18-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while the Bearcats slip to 8-12.  The teams will meet in Washington for a single, 9-inning game on Sunday (April 30).
