Strong pitching and timely hitting guided the Bearcat baseball team to a 10-6 win over Trine University in Auburndale, Florida.
Trine got on the board first, with three one-out singles in the bottom of the first inning leading to a run. SVC starter
Fred Gillespie worked his way out of the jam with the score just 1-0.

Bobby Finn singled with one out in the top of the second for the Bearcats, stole second, and scored on a
Joe Rudzinski single to tie the game. Saint Vincent took the lead in the third inning, as
Tanner Yard singled to lead off, then advanced when
Stone Holtzman was hit by a pitch.Â
Matt Morrone reached on a fielder's choice, but all runners were safe, loading the bases.Â
Patrick McElfish hit into a double play, but Yard scored on the play making it 2-1.Â
Eddie Kilkeary then doubled down the left field line, bringing home Holtzman, giving the Bearcats a 3-1 lead.

Up 3-2 in the top of the fourth, SVC added three runs on four hits. First,
Jimmy Malone singled to lead off, followed by a Rudzinski single. A bobble by the left fielder moved both runners ahead on the play, and
Matt Evans singled both home, giving SVC a 5-2 lead. Evans later scored on a passed ball, making it a four-run game.

Trine came back with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 6-4. Two innings later, Gillespie yielded a leadoff single and was replaced by
Ben Davis. A bunt single and an error loaded the bases, but Davis shut the door, keeping the 2-run SVC lead.

The score remained 6-4 going to the 9
th inning, but SVC's Yard reached on an error to lead off. Holtzman moved him ahead 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt, then Morrone drove the runner home with a single, moving to second on the throw to the plate. Kilkeary promptly singled home Morrone, and Finn followed with a 2-run home run over the left field fence, giving SVC a 10-4 lead.

The Thunder managed to score two unearned runs in the bottom of the 9
th, but Davis finished the game with a strikeout, securing the victory for the Bearcats.

Yard led the offense with three hits, while Kilkeary, Finn and Evans each had two RBI. In all, SVC had 14 hits on the day.

Gillespie (1-1) worked 5 innings for the win, giving up just one earned run and striking out three. Davis picked up the save, working four innings, giving up no earned runs and striking out four.

SVC is now 2-3 on the year and will play a doubleheader on Friday (March 9) against Anderson College of Indiana. Trine is now 4-2 on the season.Â
