LATROBE, Pa. (April 10) - The Saint Vincent baseball team scored the final three runs to earn a 4-3 victory over Grove City College in the home opener for the Bearcats. The Bearcats dropped game two by a 7-1 score to split the Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader.
In game one, Saint Vincent opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when
Tanner Yard walked and came around to score on a RBI single by
Bobby Finn. The visiting Wolverines took advantage of two Bearcat errors to tie the game with an unearned run in the fifth inning.
The score remained tied at 1-1 until the Wolverines scored two runs on four hits in the top of the seventh, taking their first lead of the game at 3-1. However, Saint Vincent battled back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Yard and
Stone Holtzman started the rally with back-to-back singles.
Then Finn reached on a hit by pitch to load the bases. The Grove City starter then hit
Eddie Kilkeary to bring home Yard, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Saint Vincent tied the game at 3-3 on an RBI by
Ramon Milke.
After both teams were held off the scoreboard in the eighth, Saint Vincent walked off with the victory in the bottom of the ninth. In a game with a combined 19 hits, KIlkeary would get the first extra base hit for either team with a one out double to set up shop. After a strikeout, Milke and
Joe Rudzinski both walked to load the bases.
Nick Amatucci was then sent to the plate to pinch hit with the bases loaded and two outs. The Bearcats scored the game-winning run when a ground ball hit by Amatucci was misplayed by the Wolverines, allowing Kilkeary to score.
Jimmy Malone earned the victory, tossing his fourth straight complete game. The sophomore allowed three runs (two earned) on 11 hits over nine innings of work. Malone struck out seven while issuing two walks. The victory moves Malone to 4-1 on the season.
Game two belonged to Grove City, as the visitors scored one in the first inning before tacking on five more runs in the second inning. The Bearcats offense never really got going in game two, as they collected just three hits. Saint Vincent's lone run came in the sixth inning when Milke brought home Holtzman to score when Grove City committed two errors on the same play.
Holtzman, Rudzinski and McElfish each tallied a hit in the nightcap for the Bearcats.
Fred Gillespie was saddled with the loss, allowing four earned runs over 1+ innings of work.
With the split, Saint Vincent moves to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in the PAC action. Grove City improves to 10-10 and 4-2 in league play.
Saint Vincent hosts Geneva College tomorrow (Wednesday) for another PAC doubleheader. First pitch at Bearcat Ballfield is slated for 1 p.m.
