Saint Vincent College senior women's lacrosse student-athlete
Maggie Nelson has been featured in the May 21 issue of
Sports Illustrated.
Nelson, a four-year standout with the Bearcats, was listed in the bi-weekly magazine's
Faces In The Crowd feature. Maggie is one of five athletes featured on page 28 of the May 21 issue.
The issue states that "Nelson, a senior midfielder at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa., scored 12 goals in a 21-18 win over Westminster, giving her 124 on the season, a Division III record. She also had her 160th point to set another mark. Through 16 games she leads D-III in goals (141) and points (178)."
Nelson set six NCAA Division III records during her senior season, which included single-season goals (141), single-season points (178), points in a single game (19), career goals (364), goals per game in a season (8.81) and points per game in a season (11.12).
Aside from the
SI mention, Nelson has picked up honors from the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association and the College Sports Information Directors of America over the past two weeks.
The last Saint Vincent College athlete to be featured in
Faces In The Crowd was Tony Washam, who is the school's all-time leading point scorer for the men's basketball program. Washam was featured in the Jan. 19, 2004 issue of
Sports Illustrated.
Faces In The Crowd is a long-running feature in
Sports Illustrated that started on Jan. 9, 1956. According to a 2014 article on
SI's website, the feature "has recognized the best up-and-coming amateur athletes from around the country." Such athletes who have been featured have been Russell Wilson (2006), Tim Tebow (2004), Jennie Finch (2002), Ben Roethlisberger (1999), Tiger Woods (1990), Emmitt Smith (1986), Magic Johnson (1977), Tony Dungy (1970), Terry Bradshaw (1966), Billie Jean King (1961) and Jack Nicklaus (1957), among many others.
The article also states "We've also highlighted countless athletes whose glory days may never extend beyond the high school, college, or masters level -- the athletes who play simply for the love of the game -- and these everyday athletic heroes are the lifeblood of
Faces in the Crowd just as much as the future stars."
