Five Bearcats scored in double figures as Saint Vincent improved to 7-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with an 83-69 win at home over Geneva.
Â
Tom Kromka led the way with 25 points and 14 rebounds, as SVC took control of the game midway through the first half and never looked back. Â With the win, SVC is now 14-2 overall, 7-0 in the PAC.
Â
The Bearcats scored the game's first four points, on a layup by
Shemar Bennett and a baseline drive by
David Stephen.
Geneva took its first lead of the game, 6-5, after a pair of free throws by Ethan Moose just over three minutes into play.
Â
The game remained close, but with Geneva in front, for the next several minutes.  A score by
Ryan Dutton and a layup by Kromka with 11:33 remaining put SVC back in front, 15-14, but the lead was short-lived.   Mark Burkholder missed a three for Geneva, but followed his own shot into the lane for an easy rebound and dunk, making it 18-17. After a Bennett score returned the lead to the Bearcats, RJ Bell hit a three to give Geneva a 21-19 edge.
Â
David Stephen then tied the game, and applied defensive pressure resulting in a turnover that led to a three by
Mike Simmons, making it 24-21.  Kromka followed with a pair of layups that ran the Bearcat lead to seven with 7:30 on the clock.
Â
At the 5:20 mark, a conventional three-point play by
Cletus Helton pushed the lead to double figures, 36-25.
Â
The lead increased to 12 with just over a minute remaining after Kromka scored and drew a foul, hitting the resulting free throw to make it 41-39.  The Bearcats eventually took a 46-33 lead at the half, led by 16 points from Kromka and 10 from Stephen.
Â
Saint Vincent scored the first 5 points of the second half, on a Bennett layup and another three-point play by Kromka, and the lead held mostly steady through much of the next 7 minutes.  A Geneva three by Danny Torok three later brought the margin to single digits, 64-55, near the 11-minute mark.
Â
A pair of free throws by Noah Damazo made the score 65-59 with just over 8 minutes remaining, but scores from Stephen and Helton pushed the lead back to 10. From there, the outcome was never in question.
Â
Behind Kromka's strong performance, Stephen tallied 15 points, while Bennett scored 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.  Simmons and Dutton each recorded 10 points.
Â
Geneva (3-4 PAC) was led by Danny Torok's 14 points.
