The SVC men's basketball team improved to 10-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, defeating Grove City College by a score of 76-63 in the Carey Center.

Saint Vincent (17-2 overall), was led by Mike Simmons, who equaled his career high with 19 points.

Saint Vincent opened a quick 7-0 lead, thanks in part to a spin move that led to a layup by Tom Kromka, and a conventional 3-point play by Shemar Bennett.  After a steal by the Bearcats, David Stephen fed Bennett in the lane, and he finished with a dunk that made the score 9-0 with 17 minutes remaining in the first half.

Grove City got on the board at the 16:15 mark with a Joe Meola layup, but SVC scored six straight points, including a three by Andrew Reed that made it a 15-2 game.

Another three by Reed and a fastbreak score by Ryan Dutton put SVC in front 20-4 with 12:40 remaining in the first half.

Later, a Kromka layup increased the lead to 19 (30-11), and a three by Stephen at the 1:10 mark gave Saint Vincent a 20-point advantage, 37-17. Simmons ended the half with a runner in the lane that just beat the buzzer, making it 40-17 at the break.

After Grove City scored the first two points of the second half, SVC answered with 10 straight points, capped by a Simmons three from the corner, making it 50-19.

With 14:36 to go, Simmons converted the rare 4-point play, hitting a three from the top of the key, drawing a foul in the process, and hitting the free throw, giving SVC a 55-23 lead.

With just over four minutes remaining, Drew Normandin scored and drew a foul, and his three-point play made it 76-47.  Grove City then went on an 16-0 run, but it wasn't enough, as SVC went on to win by 13 points.

Joining Simmons in double figures for SVC were Bennett (15), Stephen (12) and Kromka (11).  Bennett had 9 rebounds, while Kromka added 7.

SVC's Reed played solid defense on the night, guarding Grove City's Isaac Williams, one of the most prolific 3-point shooters in the conference.  Reed limited Williams to just one field goal attempt on the night, and no three-point attempts.

Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday (January 26) at Thiel College.  The game will start at 3PM.
