Bearcats finish second, Koehler wins MVP at Br. Pat Lacey Memorial

FULL RESULTS

The Saint Vincent women's bowling team made it to the championship match, but lost to Medaille College in the Br. Pat Lacey Memorial Tournament, hosted by the Bearcats at Hillview Lanes in Greensburg.

SVC sophomore Dani Koehler earned Tournament MVP honors for the second straight season, leading all bowlers with a five-game score of 1,013, an average of 202.6 per game.

The Bearcats started the day with an impressive win over Pitt-Bradford, 962-678.  Jessica Guesman picked up a split in the first frame, then followed it with six consecutive strikes.  She ended the game with a 233, the highest single game by a Bearcat on the day.  Dani Koehler had a strong game as well, getting a mark in every frame en route to a 198.  Mercedes Belch ended the game with four consecutive strikes for a 180, while Morgan Barlock also shot 180.  Meghan Christman rounded out the lineup with a 171.

In the second match, SVC got off to a slower start, but bounced back late to defeat Ursuline College, 848-714.  Koehler once again had either a strike or spare in every frame, finishing with a score of 191.  Guesman shot a 172, while Cassie Murcko finished with a 170.

The third match of the day was between SVC and Medaille College, and the match was close from the start.  SVC had a small lead early, but Medaille came back quickly and retook the lead in mid-game.  The Bearcats had three opens in the 7th frame to fall behind by 20 pins, but battled back in the 8th to close the gap.  The Bearcats got three strikes in the 10th frame from Koehler, finishing the game with a team score of 881.  Medaille's team total, going to their anchor bowler, was 862, meaning that they needed 19 pins in the 10th to tie, 20 to win.  The Mavericks' Morgan Walsh left a 7-pin on her first shot, made the spare, then threw a strike to give Medaille a one-pin victory, 882-881.

Despite the loss to Medaille, the Bearcats earned the #1 seed going to the final two rounds, based on total pins.  SVC therefore earned a bye in game four, and Koehler shot a 222 to lead the team in the fourth round.  Barlock had the second highest total for the game, 163.

Medaille defeated Daemen College in the fourth round to advance to the championship game against the Bearcats, and the teams once again kept the game close throughout.  However, the Bearcats had two open frames in the 9th and two more in the 10th, as Medaille pulled away late to a 904-851 win and the tournament championship.  Saint Vincent had to settle for the runner up position.

Koehler's total of 1,013 was a new tournament record, surpassing her own mark of 981 set last year.  Guesman was also named to the All-Tournament Team, finishing fourth overall with a score of 909, an average of 181.8 per game.

The Bearcats' 2-2 record on the day leaves the team with a 34-10 overall mark for the season.  Up next will be the second round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament, March 2-3 in Lodi, New Jersey.
