SVC sweeps crosstown rival UPG

The Bearcat softball team swept a road doubleheader against crosstown rival Pitt-Greensburg by scores of 4-2 and 11-1.

Game 1 Recap – Saint Vincent 4, Pitt-Greensburg 2

In game one, both teams were held scoreless until the fourth inning when Saint Vincent got on the board.  Kelly Flaherty reached on fielder's choice and then advanced on a throwing error by the catcher. With the error, Shae Robson was able to score.

Flaherty later scored on a single by Kelsey Tobin to left field. The Bearcats held the 2-0 lead going to the bottom of the fourth.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Bobcats cut the lead in half with a run scoring double to centerfield.

In the fifth, Saint Vincent regained its two-run lead as Johnna Karas doubled to left center, bringing home Alona Sleith. The Bearcats continued their scoring in the sixth as Megan Christner scored thanks to a Lauren Miller single.

Pitt-Greensburg added another run in the bottom of the sixth but fell by the final of 4-2.

Tobin and Miller led the team as both went three-for-four from the plate. Each of them also drove in a run.

Riley Assalone started in the circle and recorded her first win of the season. Assalone went all seven innings, allowing the two runs on five hits while striking out three.

Game 2 Recap – Saint Vincent 11, Pitt-Greensburg 1 (5 Inn.)

In the second game, it was the Bobcats that scored the first run in the bottom of the first. However, it was the last time Pitt-Greensburg would have a run cross the plate.

Saint Vincent tied the game in the second as Sleith scored on a Robson double to right center.

In the third, the Bearcats offense exploded. Kaylee Ludwick scored on a Miller sacrifice fly. Alona Sleith followed with single down the left field line that brought Karas home.

Celia Knappenberger singled, driving in Tobin to increase the Saint Vincent lead to 4-1. Sleith came around to score on an Assalone single through the left side of the infield.

Robson then reached on an error that allowed Knappenberger to score. With the bases loaded, Karas cleared the bases with a triple to right center and gave the Bearcats a 9-1 lead.  Saint Vincent added two more runs in the third and won by the final of 11-1.

Karas led the offense with two hits in four at-bats while driving in three runs and scoring twice.

Knappenberger started in the circle for the Bearcats and won her third game by going three innings, allowing the lone run on two hits but struck out four.
