GROVE CITY, Pa. (April 2) – The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the 2022 season, falling 12-7 at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Grove City.
The host Wolverines (7-4, 1-0 PAC) outscored the Bearcats (6-1, 0-1) 6-1 over the final 17 minutes of play to break open a tie game and pull away for the win.
Andrew Coholich scored three goals to lead Saint Vincent, with Caleb Hawkins adding two goals and Matthew Cassidy one. Jacob Crumling and Benjamin Wohlin each finished with two caused turnovers for the Bearcat defense, while Noah Sperling made 16 saves in goal.
After the teams traded scoreless trips over the first seven minutes of play, the Bearcats struck first, with Wodarek's unassisted goal with 8:08 left in the quarter. Ninety seconds later, Coholich scored his first, assisted by Alec Richard, to give SVC a 2-0 lead, which is how the score would stand at the close of the first quarter.
The Wolverines opened the second quarter with a flurry, scoring three unanswered goals in the first four minutes to take their first lead, 3-2. Coholich's second goal of the game, assisted by Condrasky, pulled the Bearcats even with 8:50 to go in the half, but the Wolverines closed the quarter with four goals over the final five minutes to take a 6-3 lead into the break.
Following the intermission, momentum swung the way of the Bearcats. Two minutes into the third quarter, Hawkins scored his first of the game to cut the deficit to 6-4. With 5:34 left in the quarter, Hawkins scored his second, before Coholich tied the game and completed the hat trick with 4:05 left in the frame. Grove City answered right back with two goals over the final 90 seconds of quarter to take an 8-6 lead into the final frame.
A man-up goal with 11:20 left in the game upped the Wolverine lead to 9-6, before Cassidy cut the deficit back to two with a goal with 7:12 remaining. The Bearcats would get no closer, however, as Grove City scored the final three goals to close out the win.
Matt Blyth led the Grove City offense with four goals, while Brett Gladstone scored twice.
Saint Vincent will now have a week-long layoff before returning to PAC play on Saturday, April 9, hosting Bethany at noon at UPMC Field.
