Bearcats win 7 of 10 in New York

The Saint Vincent women's bowling team won seven of 10 matches in the Daemen University Fall Classic, held in Lockport, New York.

The team finished third overall in total pins among 12 participating schools, and one bowler, sophomore Abby Justice, was named to the All-Tournament Team.

DAY ONE
Saint Vincent opened the weekend with a match against William Smith College, which had handed the Bearcats their only defeat of the season to that point.  The match was close through the first six frames, but WSC pulled away late, to win by a score of 927-837.  Justice had the top score, shooting a 181.

In the second game of the day, the Bearcats faced Ursuline College and earned a 150-pin victory, 889-739.  Daphne Stuber led the way for SVC with a 201 game, while Justice added a 191.

Up next for the Bearcats were the Saints of D'Youville University, and SVC trailed throughout much of the game.  Down 30 pins with just two frames remaining, the Bearcats were lifted to the win in part thanks to four straight strikes by Sabine Strickland, along with doubles from Jackie Koehler and Justice.  Justice finished with a 209, while Strickland added a 205 as SVC won the game, 894-846.

In game four, the Bearcats struggled with lane transition, but still managed to earn a 145-pin win over Hilbert College. Jackie Koehler finished with a 203, while Justice had a 184 game.  SVC won the match but scored its lowest total of the day, an 813.

SVC bounced right back with its strongest game in the final match of the afternoon, but host Daemen University was up to the challenge.  SVC finished with an average of just over 200 per bowler, but lost by 47 to Daemen, 1050-1003.  Koehler (226), Strickland (208) and Justice (201) had the top scores.

DAY TWO
The formal for the second day of competition was five sets of five Baker team games, with total pins deciding the win or loss.  SVC finished the day with a 4-1 record, recording wins over Baldwin Wallace, Pitt-Bradford, Penn State-Behrend and Pitt-Greensburg.  The lone loss was to Roberts Wesleyan in a close match.  Saint Vincent fell behind by 35 pins with a 193-158 loss in the first game, but won the second by a 223-154 margin.  Roberts won the third game, 178-146, then won the fourth by a 189-147 margin, taking a 41-pin lead into the final game.  SVC battled back and won the final game by 29 pins, but it wasn't enough to erase the deficit, as RWU won by a final score of 856-845.

Individually, Abby Justice finished third overall in scoring on day one, averaging 193.2, and was named to the All-Tournament Team.  Sabine Stricklland (182.6) finished 11th.  Jackie Koehler, who bowled in four games, averaged 190.2.

On day two, Justice again led the team, averaging 185.5. Stuber was second with a 174.9 average, while Jackie Koehler finished at 172.2 and Monique Koehler at 170.8.

Tournament host Daemen University won the event, while Mercyhurst University was second. Both are NCAA Division II programs.

Saint Vincent is now 23-4 on the season, and will return to the Buffalo area this coming weekend for their first conference round-robin tournament of the season.  Action will begin on Friday afternoon at 2:30PM.
