LATROBE, Pa. (March 31) – Visiting Washington & Jefferson defeated Saint Vincent, 20-6, in a Presidents' Athletic Conference women's lacrosse matchup at a rainy UPMC Field.
The visiting Presidents (5-3, 2-0 PAC) broke open what was a close game early on by scoring six unanswered goals over the final nine minutes of the first quarter and never looked back, handing the Bearcats (5-4, 0-2 PAC) their third straight defeat.
Maggie Edwards led Saint Vincent on three points, with two goals and one assist, while Rachel Thatcher scored two goals, and Carolina Walters and Kaylee Bandow one apiece. Bridget Doyle doled out two assists, with teammate Jessica Persin tallying one helper.
Persin led the Bearcats with five ground balls, while Hannah-Marie Starner scooped up two ground balls and led her team with five draw controls.
Edwards, Thatcher, Persin, Georgie Volna and Bailey Nicely each finished with one caused turnover.
The defending PAC champion Presidents outshot the Bearcats 33-14 for the game, while also controlling 19 of 28 draws and corralling 25 ground balls to SVC's 13.
Saint Vincent will be back in action on Wednesday, April 5, when it welcomes PAC foe Waynesburg to Latrobe for a 4 p.m. matchup at UPMC Field. It will mark the second meeting between the two squads, as the Bearcats defeated the Yellow Jackets, 23-12, in a non-conference game on March 22.
