Men's volleyball falls to Thiel, 3-1

GREENVILLE, Pa. (Apr. 1)- The Saint Vincent men's volleyball team traveled to Greenville, Pa. where they fell 3-1 in an AMCC matchup to Thiel.
 
After falling in the first set 25-9, Saint Vincent (9-9, 7-5 AMCC) won set two 25-21 but lost the next two sets to Thiel (14-12, 9-3 AMCC) by slight margins of 25-23 and 26-24.

Matthew Minkin had a huge day offensively recording a game-high 20 kills, while also picking up 13 digs for a double-double. Shawn McSwiggen was the only other Bearcat to record double-digit kills with 16, while also picking up 16 digs for a double-double as well.
 
Zach Wyant recorded a double-double too, with 29 assists and 13 digs.
 
In the first set despite the lopsided score, the Bearcats took control early on. Saint Vincent scored the first three points in the set om a kill by Minkin, followed by a setting error by the Tomcats and a kill from McSwiggen to give SVC an early 3-0 lead.
 
Thiel stormed back with a 4-1 run to tie the set up at 4-4 and never looked back. The Bearcats struggled to score in the rest of the set as they were held to just nine points, as Thiel outscored the Bearcats 21-5 over the rest of the first set as the Bearcats dropped set one (25-9), as Thiel took a 1-0 lead.
 
The Bearcats bounced back in the second set. Saint Vincent and Thiel traded the first few points of the second set as the set was tied 7-7 and then still tied at 10-10. Thiel finally broke the tie as they scored four of the next five points to take a 14-11 lead.
 
Thiel continued on the attack as they still remained in the lead at 18-15 but the Bearcats came back. Saint Vincent scored four points in a row on a kill by Chrystiaan Sexton and three straight attack errors by the Tomcats gave the Bearcats the lead at 19-18. Thiel tied it up on the next point and the game remained tied at 21-21 before the Bearcats closed out the set.
 
Saint Vincent scored the final four points of the set on kills by McSwiggen and Wyant, followed by an attack error and service ace by McSwiggen as Saint Vincent won set two (25-21), tying the match up at 1-1.
 
In the third set it was Saint Vincent that took the early advantage. The Bearcats continued on the attack as they scored three straight points on three straight kills by Minkin to take a 14-9 lead in the set. That's when the Thiel comeback started.
 
The Tomcats came back to tie the set up 15-15 and then gained the lead back at 19-16. After the Bearcats tied it up at 20-20 on kills by Wyant and McSwiggen, Thiel closed the set out on a 5-3 run to win the set (25-23), taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
In the fourth set, it was back-and-forth once again. The set was tied 12-12 as neither team was able to gain any separation. Saint Vincent finally gained some ground, scoring six of the next seven points including three straight points on two kills by Minkin and a setting error by the Tomcats to take an 18-13 lead.
 
Thiel answered storming back with an 8-2 run as the Tomcats took a 21-20 lead. The teams traded the next couple of points as the set was tied 23-23 after a kill from McSwiggen. Thiel then closed out the match on a 3-1 run to win the set (26-24), winning the match 3-1.
 
The Bearcats return to action, closing out their regular season schedule with a home matchup against Mount Aloysius on Wednesday, April 5. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the Robert S. Carey Center.
