The Saint Vincent women's bowling team swept all seven matches in the first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament of the season, held in Waterloo, New York. The Bearcats were strong throughout the weekend, averaging 183.3 and leading all teams in total pins by more than 370.
The format for the weekend was seven sets of five-game Baker team blocks, with total pins deciding the winner of each match.
DAY ONE
The Bearcats got off to a solid start in game one of the day against Pitt-Greensburg, capturing the opener by a score of 203-190. SVC pulled away with scores of 189 and 225 in games three and four, going on to win 896-654.
In the second match of the day, the Bearcats faced host William Smith College, and battled to a 2-pin lead in the first game, 170-168. SVC left three splits in game two, falling 190-138, putting the team 50 pins down with just three games to go. After a 168-129 win in game three that cut the gap to just 11, William Smith bounced back with a 184-178 win in the fourth game, leaving the Bearcats down 17 pins with just one game remaining.
Brooke Street and
Daphne Stuber opened the game with strikes, and after a spare by
Kaylie Kurland,
Sabine Strickland and
Skyy Nicholls followed with strikes to put SVC in front. Street and Stuber threw spares in frames 6 and 7, followed by a spare from
Mareana Pilyih in the 8th frame. Strickland added a strike in the 9th, and Nicholls needed to convert a spare in the 10th She made the spare and added 8 pins on the final ball to lift SVC to a 214-192 win in the game, and an 868-863 match victory.
The team kept the momentum going against Penn State-Behrend, winning by 99 pins, 906-807, leaving the team at 3-0 with one match remaining, against 3-0 Pitt-Bradford.
SVC fell behind UPB after the first game, 175-160, but stormed back in game two with a 188-144 win. In game three, the Bearcats extended their lead to 62, with a 180-147 win. SVC ended the day with games of 209 and 235, pulling away to a 972-842 victory and an undefeated afternoon.
Daphne Stuber led the team on day one with an average of 194.4, while Pilyih averaged 187.8 and Kurland finished at 184.6.
DAY TWO
SVC set the tone early against rival Alvernia University, shooting a 245 game to take an 85-pin lead after just one game. The Bearcats added a pair of 194 games in the third and fourth games, pulling away to a 101-pin victory, 962-861.
The team followed with a 928-737 win against Hilbert College, ending with a 207 game. The final match of the weekend saw the Bearcats defeat La Roche University, 886-682.
Skyy Nicholls led the team on Sunday with an average of 224.8, followed by
Kaylie Kurland (190),
Mareana Pilyih (186.5) and
Sabine Strickland (180.9). For the weekend, Nicholls averaged 202.5. Rounding out the top 5 for the Bearcats were Pilyih (191.1), Kurland (186.5), Strickland (177) and Stuber (175.5).
With a 7-0 record, the Bearcats are in first place in the conference. Penn State-Behrend (5-2), Pitt-Bradford (5-2) and William Smith College (5-2) are all tied for second place.
Saint Vincent wraps up the fall semester with a record of 26-9 overall.
