McSwiggen Enters Record Books as Men's Volleyball Secures Comeback Win at Penn State-Altoona

ALTOONA, Pa. (Mar. 20)- The Saint Vincent men's volleyball team earned a comeback 3-2 win on the road at Penn State-Altoona to keep their perfect AMCC record alive.

The Bearcats (15-7, 6-0 AMCC) trailed 2-0 before winning the next three sets in a row by scores of 26-24, 25-22, and 15-10 to down the Lions (10-10, 2-3 AMCC) on the road, winning their sixth straight AMCC contest.

Shawn McSwiggen entered the Saint Vincent record books with a program-record 32-kill match. McSwiggen beats his own record of 31 kills, which he set earlier this season, also against Penn State-Altoona.

McSwiggen also added 12 digs, which was a game high as well and added two blocks and one service ace to add to his already impressive night.

Zach Wyant also had a monster game for the Bearcats with a career-high 50-assist performance. Wyant's 50 assists are the second most in a five-set match in program history.

Matthew Minkin had a big game for the Bearcats as well with 11 kills and 11 digs, while also adding a block in the win. Matthew Klasnic added 11 digs and Zebadiah Wyant recorded eight kills for SVC.

Saint Vincent recorded a strong .269 hitting percentage over the course of the match as well.

It was all Lion's in the first two sets of the night. After controlling the entirety of the early portions of the opening set, the Lions led Saint Vincent 24-16. The Bearcats attempted to come back with a quick 6-0 run, two of which came on McSwiggen kills, cutting the lead to 24-22. The Lions went on to score the next point to earn the 25-22 win in the first set, taking a 1-0 lead over Saint Vincent.

It was back-and-forth in the second set through the middle portions as the set was tied 9-9 and then 13-13. Altoona scored the next four points to take a 17-13 lead and never looked back. The Lions went on to outscore SVC 8-6 over the remaining points to win the set, 25-19, taking a commanding 2-0 lead over Saint Vincent.

Momentum began to shift in favor of Saint Vincent in the third set. SVC opened up to a 3-1 lead after a kill from Zeb Wyant and two attack errors by the Lions. Penn State-Altoona climbed back into it, tying the set up at 6-6.

The Bearcats answered scoring the next four points on a kill from McSwiggen and three errors by the Lions as SVC took a 10-6 lead.

Once again, Altoona battled back to tie the set up at 19-19 and then 23-23. The Bearcats went on to score three of the final four points of the set, one of which came on a kill from McSwiggen as the Bearcats won the third set (26-24), cutting into the Altoona lead at 2-1.

In the fourth set, the Lions and Bearcats both traded runs early, before finding themselves tied at 12 once again. The teams continued to trade points as the set remained tied at 15-15 and 20-20.

The Bearcats took the first advantage late with a 3-0 run on a kill from McSwiggen, attack error by the Lions, and kill from Zachary Mumpower as Saint Vincent took a 23-20 lead. Altoona scored two of the next three, before Rocco Marino ended the set for the Bearcats with a kill, as SVC won the set 25-22, forcing a fifth set.

In the fifth set, it was similar to how the rest of the game had gone as the teams traded the first several points, finding themselves tied at 7-7. Saint Vincent scored the next four points, two of which came on kills from Minkin and McSwiggen as the Bearcats took an 11-7 lead.

The Lions slightly cut into the lead as they trailed by three at 13-10 but the Bearcats closed it out on back-to-back kills. First Zeb Wyant recorded a kill and then a fitting end to the comeback as McSwiggen recorded the record 32nd kill to win the set, 15-10 and the match 3-2 for Saint Vincent.

The Bearcats recorded 59 digs in comparison to 50 from the Lions. Saint Vincent also had 53 assists, five blocks, and 57 kills as a team in the win as well.

Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, March 23, as they take on Penn State-Behrend at home on senior day. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday with senior day festivities taking place prior to the game.
