(Alliance, OH) - The Saint Vincent men's tennis team opened the Spring in thrilling fashion, coming from behind to beat Mount Union 4-3 in non-conference action.
The Bearcats started out hot securing a 6-1 win at third doubles by J.T. Gockel and Brian Lee, but the excitement was short lived as SVC dropped the remaining doubles matches by matching 2-6 scores to go down 0-1 in the match.Â
The Green and Gold leveled things at 1-1 when Deven Summers rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win at sixth singles. The Raiders struck back by claiming straight sets wins at first and third singles to put SVC down 1-3. From that point on it was a back-and-forth affair starting with Matthew Sadusky at second singles. Sadusky claimed the opening set 6-4 before falling 2-6 in the second, and ultimately claiming the deciding third set 6-4 to get the Bearcats back on the board 2-3. Kyle Murray was next off and tied the match at 3-3 after winning a tense straight setter, 6-2, 6-4, at fifth singles.Â
With the match hanging in the balance Jack Citrone dropped a tight first set 5-7 before bullying his way back even with a 6-1 second set win. In the third set Citrone got down a break early, 1-2 and had to battle from behind for most of the set. Being down 5-6 late in the set Citrone fought off three straight match point serves to comeback from a 15-40 deficit and take the match to a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker was all Bearcats as the Senior raced out to a 5-2 lead and claimed the breaker 7-3 to secure the SVC win!
The Bearcats move to 6-0 on the year and begin their Spring campaign on a high note. The Green and Gold will return to action on Saturday, February 22 as they host PSU-Altoona in the friendly confines of the Greensburg Racquet Club. First serve is slated for 2:30PM.
