BOX SCORE
The Lady Bearcat soccer team closed out the 2010 season on a high note, defeating the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown 2-1 on the Saint Vincent Turf.
Saint Vincent scored the game's first goal, as 21 minutes into play,
Monika Derboghossian picked up a loose ball in traffic 20 yards out, dribbled through a pair of defenders, and placed a shot just inside the far post to give the Lady Bearcats the 1-0 lead.
Play was even for the duration of the first half, with most of the action taking place in the middle third of the field, until the closing moments. With less than 30 seconds left, the Lady Bearcats were granted a corner kick, and
Tenesha Corrales lofted the ball into the box. As time expired, the ball caromed off of SVC's
Catherine Czapski and sailed just wide of the net, sending the game into the intermission with the Lady Bearcats holding onto the one-goal lead.
Over the first half, each team took seven shots, while the Lady Bearcats owned a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Saint Vincent goalie
Cassie Overly stopped all four first half UPJ shots on goal.
Neither team musted much offense over the opening moments of the half, until Saint Vincent added onto its lead with 38 minutes left to play on freshman Fran Kovach's first career goal, as she lofted a floater over UPJ goalie Victoria Der Vanik from 20 yards out.
Pitt-Johnstown then upped the offensive pressure, taking six of the game's next eight shots, and closed their deficit to one when Lindsey Roessler scored on an odd-angled shot with 27 minutes left to play to make the score 2-1.
Roessler's proved to be the final goal of the afternoon, however, as the Lady Bearcat defense tightened up, with
Valeri Wilbert making four second half saves in relief of Overly, to wrap up the season with the victory.
For the game, UPJ owned a slim 20-17 margin in shots, while Saint Vincent took five corner kicks to the Mountain Cats' four.
With the win, Saint Vincent ends the year with a 6-10-3 overall record, while the Mountain Cats, an NCAA Division-II program, finished 3-13.
