Field Hockey closes season with win, 3-2

LATROBE (Oct. 29) - The Saint Vincent field hockey team closed out its 2011 season with a 3-2 win over Notre Dame (Md.) during snowy conditions on the SVC Turf.

The Bearcats recorded the first goal of the game when senior Ashley Nowicki tallied her first career goal of an assist from sophomore Kayla Howard after 9:58 had elapsed. The Gators answered back with the next two scores as Sarah Morris tied the game, 1-1, at the 18:09-mark and Kristine Chen gave the visitors a 2-1 lead at the 25:51-mark. Just 87 seconds later however, Howard posted her first goal of the game to knot the game up at 2-2.

The two teams went into halftime with the score tied and then with just over eight minutes remaining, Howard recorded the eventual game-winner for her second goal of the game and team-leading fourth of the season. SVC held possession of the ball for a majority of the final minutes and was able to hang on for the 3-2 victory.

For the game, Saint Vincent out-shot Notre Dame, 14-7, behind a balanced six shots in the first half and eight shots in the second half. Howard led all players with five shots on the afternoon while Nowicki and sophomore Kiana Wilson each added a pair of shots. Eight players for SVC registered a shot as seniors Sara Berger, Emma Leonard, Lauren Donahue and Michelle Allemang and freshman Molly Snyder each collected a shot.

SVC also held an edge on penalty corners, taking eight to NDM's six.

Junior Bridget Harner earned the win in goal, making three saves in 70 minutes. NDM's Emily Langton suffered the loss while allowing three goals and making four saves.

With the win the Bearcats finish the 2011 campaign with a 2-10 record while the Gators close out the regular season with a 2-11 mark.
