Bearcats establish 23 school records in PAC Championships

Both the Saint Vincent men's and women's swimming teams wrapped up the 2010-11 season by finishing fourth at the 2011 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Grove City College, setting 23 school records during the meet.

The Lady Bearcats finished with a cumulative team score of 390, while the Bearcat men ended the three-day event with a score of 227.

On the third and final day, the two teams combined to break four team records. On the women's side, Christine Dunleavy's eighth-place time of 2:34.60 in the 200 Breaststroke established a new team mark, as did the 400 Free Relay foursome of Katie Custer, Carolyn Claybrooks, Maggie Dempsey, and Jess Kennedy, which took third with a time of 3:39.49.  Later in the day, Mary Kate Kenna lowered Dunleavy's 200 Breaststroke mark to 2:34.32

The Bearcat men saw new records established in the same events.  In the 200 Breast, Dan Kostovny took 10th, with a new school record time of 2:16.02.  In the 400 Free Relay, Casey Whittaker, Tom Nielsen, Matt Linebaugh, and Logan Dorminey teamed up to take sixth, with a time of 3:17.91

Individually, the Lady Bearcats were led by freshman Carolyn Claybrooks and Katie Custer.  The former took fifth in the 1650 Free, with a time of 18:49.29, while the latter took fifth in the 100 Free, timed in 53.95 seconds.

The Saint Vincent women turned in an especially strong effort in the 1650 Free, with four swimmers finishing in the top 12, as Claybrooks was joined by sixth-place finisher Amanda Haile, eighth-place finisher Jayna Cline (19:02.03), and 12th-place finisher Kelsey Linstrum, who was timed in 19:41.71.

Dempsey added a ninth-place performance in the 100 Free, timed in 55.07 seconds, while Mary Kate Kenna was a second Lady Bearcat to finish in the top 10 in the 200 Breast, turning in a 10th-place time of 2:35.59.

The SVC women saw two swimmers finish in the top 15 in the 200 Fly, as Meredith Brown took 12th, timed in 2:23.02, and Kennedy 15th, in 2:27.21.

On the men's side, freshman Sam Cline led the charge individually on day three, taking ninth in the 1650 Free, with a time of 17:37.89, two places and four seconds ahead of teammate Zack Krejdovsky.  In addition to their relay efforts, Whittaker and Linebaugh turned in 13th and 14th place finishes, respectively, in the 100 Freestyle, with times of 49.37 and 49.82.  In the 200 Fly, the Bearcat men were led by freshman Michael Gruss' time of 2:12.06, good for 14th.  

Host Grove City swept the championships, as the Wolverine men posted a score of 948, and the Wolverine women turning in a three-day score of 889 points.  On the men's side, Westminster College took second (654 points), followed by Washington & Jefferson (472), Saint Vincent (227), and Bethany (128).

The Washington & Jefferson women finished second, with a score of 651, followed by Westminster (576), Saint Vincent (390), Chatham (272), and Bethany (58). 

DAY TWO - Feb 18, 2011
The top performance of the second day belonged to Lady Bearcat freshman Carolyn Claybrooks, who took third in the 200 Freestyle with a school-record time of 2:00.18.  The SVC women also received a strong performance in the 100 Breaststroke, as Christine Dunleavy took fifth, with a time of 1:08.57 - another new SVC standard - and teammate Alexis Milinski finished 12th, with a time of 1:14.14.

Katie Custer earned a seventh  place finish in the 100 Fly, timed in 1:00.60, while Mary Kate Kenna took eighth in the 400 Individual Medley, with a time of 4:55.31.  Yet again, it was a new Saint Vincent record. 

In relay action, the Lady Bearcat foursome of Dunleavy, Custer, Jess Kennedy, and Meredith Brown took fourth, timed in 1:52.60, breaking another school mark.  The SVC women wrapped up the day with a fifth place showing in the 800 Free Relay, as the foursome of Claybrooks, Kennedy, Brown, and Maggie Dempsey turned in a time of 8:09.78, also a new SVC record.

The Bearcat men received their top finish from Casey Whittaker, who took seventh in the 100 Fly, with a school-record time of 53.48.  Tom Nielsen recorded a 12th place finish in the 100 Back, timed in 56.54,  while Sam Cline took 10th in the 400 IM (4:27.54) and Dan Kostovny finished 12th in the 100 Breast, with a time of 1:03.80. 

In relay action, Saint Vincent took fifth in the 800 Freestyle, with the foursome of Nielsen, Cline, Logan Dorminey, and Matt Linebaugh finishing in 7:21.99, another new mark for the SVC record books.  The 200 Medley Relay team of Nielsen, Kostovny, Whittaker, and Adam Thomas turned in a time of 1:41.52. good for sixth.


DAY ONE - Feb 17, 2011
On the first day of the PAC Championships, Saint Vincent saw seven school records broken, beginning with the opening event, the 200 Freestyle Relay.  On the women's side, the foursome of Katie Custer, Maggie Dempsey, Meredith Brown, and Jess Kennedy took fourth, with a school-record time of 1:40.34.  The Bearcat men - Casey Whittaker, Adam Thomas, Matt Linebaugh, and Logan Dorminey - followed with a school-record time of 1:28.51, good for fifth place.

Freshman Carolyn Claybrooks was a second SVC swimmer to enter the record books, as she posted a time of 5:21.99 in the 500 Free, good for fourth place.  The Bearcat women were well represented in the event, as teammate Amanda Haile finished eighth (5:40.28), and Jayna Cline and Kelsey Linstrum tied for 11th.

Mary Kate Kenna took 13th in the 200 Individual Medley, with a school-record time of 2:18.66, followed closely by Brown, who took 16th with a time of 2:21.83.  In the men's race, Whittaker took 12th, setting a school-record with a time of 2:02.51.  

Both Bearcat 400 Medley Relay squads also set a new school mark, as the Lady Bearcat foursome of Custer, Claybrooks, Sarah Denning, and Christine Dunleavy took fifth, with a time of 4:09.12.  The Bearcat men- Whittaker, Linebaugh, Dan Kostovny, and Tom Nielsen- also finished fifth, timed in 3:42.06.  

The Saint Vincent women were well represented in the 50 Freestyle, placing three in the top 10.  Custer finished third, with a time of 24.56 seconds, with Dempsey taking ninth (24.95) and Kennedy 10th (25.44).
