Isaac Turner tied a school record with 18 free throws and topped the 1000-point mark in his career as the Bearcats won their Presidents' Athletic Conference opener for the season by a 96-89 score over Westminster College.
Turner was perfect from the line - 18-for-18 - tying the record for made free throws in a game originally set by Tony Washam in 2004. Â Overall, Turner had 27 points on the afternoon. Â He came into the game 13 shy of the 1000 mark.
The Bearcats started the game strong, with buckets from
Sean Kett,
Dillon Stith and Turner giving SVC a 6-0 lead.Â
Â
However, led by Paul Carswell and aided by Bearcat fouls, the Titans stormed back and scored the game's next 11 points.
Â
Saint Vincent then regrouped and went on an 11-2 run to take a 17-13 lead near the midway point of the half.
Â
Later, a three by
Ben Klimchock doubled the SVC lead from three to six points, 25-19. Layups by
JC Howard and Kett then increased the lead to its largest of the half, ten, 29-19.
Â
With just under four minutes to go, Turner hit a jumper to give him 13 points in the game, and more importantly 1000 in his Bearcat career. The bucket made the score 33-26.
Â
At the 3:07 mark,
Darren Hawkins stole an inbound pass from the Titans and scored to extend the lead back to ten, 38-28. Kett later added two conventional three-point plays, part of a scoring flurry in the final two minutes of the half, as SVC took a 46-38 lead into the break.
Â
SVC continued its momentum into the second half, running the lead as high as 11 points, 71-60, after a jumper by Klimchock with just under 10 minutes left.
However, the hosts then went on a 16-4 run to take a 76-75 lead on a drive by Anthony Thomas with 5:49 left to go.
The lead then changed hands several times, with SVC reclaiming the advantage on a conventional 3-point play by Kett at the 3:27 mark that made it 82-80 in favor of the Bearcats.
After a blocked shot by Stith,
Pat Jones connected on a three-pointer from the corner to make it a 5-point game, 85-80, but another score by Thomas later brought the game back to a one-point margin, 85-84 ,with 2:10 on the clock.
Stith hit a pair of free throws nine seconds later, then Turner grabbed a rebound after a Titan miss. Â The Bearcats successfully ran the shot clock down before Kett drove the lane for a score with just 1:07 remaining.
From there, Turner hit four free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win and tie the record, and Stith punctuated the win with a dunk as Saint Vincent earned the road victory.
Stith ended the game with 25 points and 11 rebounds, to go along with 3 blocks and two steals. Â Kett was solid on the day as well, tallying 19 points on 8-11 shooting, along with 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Â Howard added 12 points and a pair of steals.
SVC is now 1-0 in the PAC, 7-2 overall. Â The team will face Washington & Jefferson College at home at 6:30PM on Monday, December 16. Â
