Pitching leads SVC to doubleheader sweep in Virginia

Dave Culeton tossed a 2-hit shutout, while Dylan Pietrantoni and Luke Spisak scattered five hits in an extra inning contest as the Bearcats defeated the Newport News Apprentice School by a scores of 1-0 and 4-1 in a doubleheader in Hampton, Virginia.

In game one, Saint Vincent manufactured the game's lone run in the second inning, as Chris Winkler drew a leadoff walk and moved to second when Aaron Burger bunted for a single.  Joe Simsic then put down a successful sacrifice bunt, moving the runners ahead.  TJ Kuny grounded out, scoring Winkler with what would prove to be the game's lone run.

Culeton took care of the rest, retiring the final 10 batters of the game and cruising to the victory, his first of the season.  He struck out two without yielding a walk, facing just 23 batters for the game.

SVC managed just four hits in the pitchers' duel, with Burger accounting for a pair.

The Bearcats yielded a run in the second inning of the second game and stayed behind 1-0 until the final scheduled inning.  In the top of the 7th, SVC was down to its final two outs when Matthew Morrone singled, then advanced on walks to Greg Martin and TJ Kuny.  Luke Fox grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Morrone to tie the game.  Spisak shut down the Builders in the 7th to send the game into extra innings, and SVC responded quickly.

In the top of the 8th, pinch-hitter Aaron Burger singled to lead off and scored on a triple by Ben Webb.  Eddie Kilkeary singled home Webb to make it 3-1, then scored on a triple by Morrone.

Spisak worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning to seal the victory and the doubleheader sweep.

Morrone led the offense with 3 hits on the day, while Webb went 2-for-3.
