PHOTO GALLERYDylan Pietrantoni tossed a 4-hit shutout as SVC avenged a 12-6 loss in game one with a 2-0 victory in game two of a twinbill against Bethany College at Bearcat Ballfield.
In game one, the visitors scored twice on four hits in the top of the first, and increased the lead to 4-0 after a pair of unearned runs that chased starter
Tyler Frankel (4-1). Â
Saint Vincent answered with single runs in the third and fifth to make the score 4-2. Â However, the Bison then tallied four runs in the top of the 6th to increase the lead to 8-2. Â SVC stormed back in the bottom of the sixth, as
Aaron Burger and
TJ Kuny singled to start the inning and force Bethany to go to its bullpen. Â Pinch-hitter
Jason Vater was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then
Luke Fox doubled home a pair of runs. Â With one out,
Ben Webb singled home two more runs to make it an 8-6 game, but the Bearcats were unable to add more runs. Â Meanwhile, the Bison came right back with four more runs in the 7th to seal the win.
Kuny led the SVC offense, going 3-for-3 with a walk, and ran his streak 7-for-7 with a walk in his last 8 plate appearances. Â Burger,
Chris Winkler, and
Greg Martin each had two hits.
Pietrantoni gave up a pair of hits in the first inning, but a 4-6-3 double play got him out of the jam, and he cruised the rest of the way with some help from first baseman
Jason Vater, who made a pair of solid defensive plays.
At the plate, SVC got a boost from leadoff hitter
Luke Fox. Â In the bottom of the first, Fox started things with a single to left center. Â He then stole second and moved to third on a groundout by Winkler. Â Webb's sacrifice fly brought home Fox with what would turn out to be the game-winning run.
In the third, it was again Fox that got things rolling as he hit a sharp liner up the middle. Â Fox never stopped as he rounded first, turning what should have been a routine single into a double. Â With two out, Martin singled to right, scoring Fox with an insurance run.
It was more than enough for Pietrantoni (1-2), who walked two and struck out six.
Saint Vincent is now 11-7 overall, 4-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Â Bethany is 3-2 in the PAC. Â The two teams will meet again on Sunday (April 3) in West Virginia for a single, 9-inning contest. Â
NOTEBOOK....Kuny singled in his first at bat of game two, putting him on base for the 9th straight time. Â The streak ended with a flyout in the fourth inning...Fox's stolen base in the first inning was the 23rd of his Bearcat career in 23 attempts.
