Malone, Martin shine in 4-1 SVC victory

Freshman Jimmy Malone worked eight strong innings, while Greg Martin drove in all four runs to lead Saint Vincent to a 4-1 victory on the road in Virginia over the Newport News Apprentice School.

Malone scattered five hits, walked two and struck out four, while Martin provided a 2-run home run along with a pair of RBI singles to boost the offense. Freshman reliever Ben Davis worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his first collegiate save.

In the top of the first, Patrick McElfish hit a 2-out double, then scored on a Martin single to put SVC in front 1-0.  The Builders tied the game in the bottom of the second on a pair of hits.

Saint Vincent came right back in the top of the 3rd, as Tanner Yard singled then moved to second when McElfish walked.  Martin then singled home Yard for the go-ahead run.

Malone kept the Builders off the board the rest of the way, then Martin added some insurance in the top of the 8th.  After McElfish once again got on base, this time with a single, Martin followed with a 2-run blast over the right field wall to make it 4-1.

Davis came on in the bottom of the 9th and worked a perfect inning for the save.

In the second game of the split doubleheader, SVC faced 11th-ranked Tufts University and fell by a score of 22-0.  SVC managed just one hit, as freshman Mike Hildebrand singled in his first collegiate at-bat.
