LATROBE, Pa. (March 23) -
Mackenzie Gostomski collected seven hits to pace the Bearcats in a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Altoona in non-conference action.
Saint Vincent earned a hard fought 5-4 victory in nine innings during the first game of day, before adding an 8-0 five inning decision over the Lions for the sweep.
Gostomski was the catalyst for the Bearcats offense on the day, going 7-for-8 out of the leadoff spot. The sophomore outfielder added four runs scored on the afternoon.
The Bearcats had to battle back in game one after spotting Altoona an early 3-0 lead. Saint Vincent tied the game up in the bottom of the third with three runs. Gostomski started the scoring, using a single to bring home sophomore
Kelly Flaherty. Junior
Emily Duerr and sophomore
Kelsey Hunter also added run scoring hits in the inning.
Both teams were kept off the scoreboard for the next four innings, as Duerr and PSU Altoona starter Kate Burge held the respective offenses in check, forcing extra innings.
Playing under the international tiebreaker rules, each team scored a run in the 8th, making it 4-4 heading to the ninth. Senior pitcher
Samantha Emert relieved Duerr in the circle, pitched out of trouble to set up the walkoff in the bottom of the inning for SVC. That is when Gostomski used an RBI groundout to bring home Flaherty for the game winner for the Bearcats.
Aside from Gostomski's strong game one, Hunter added a two-hit performance. Emert picked up the win, striking out two in an inning of relief.
Saint Vincent had an easier time in game two, building an early lead. Junior first baseman
Shelby Noel smacked a RBI double into the gap to score Gostomski in the first.
The Bearcats tacked on six more runs in the second inning, chasing the Lions starting pitcher. The inning was aided by a pair of Altoona errors. Noel and Emert each recorded RBI singles before Flaherty brought two more home with a two-run single. Hunter would tack on a RBI single in the third to wrap up the scoring.
Emert put together a stellar performance in game two, earning the shutout while surrendering just one hit. Emert struck out three while not issuing a walk.
Gostomski went 4-for-4 in game two, while Noel and Hunter added two-hit efforts for SVC.
The Bearcats improve to 5-5 overall and move their current winning streak to three games. Altoona drops to 4-10 for the season.
Saint Vincent hosts Juniata College on Saturday, March 25 for Senior Day. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. in non-conference action.
