Jimmy Malone pitched 7 strong innings in his first collegiate start, but the Bearcats committed six errors, falling 5-3 to Wittenberg University in Winter Haven, Florida.
Things started well for the Bearcats, as
Matt Morrone doubled to open the game.
Patrick Mahon reached on an error, moving Morrone to third, then
Bobby Finn singled to left to put SVC in front, 1-0.
Patrick McElfish followed with a single to load the bases, then
Eddie Kilkeary reached on an error, scoring Mahon.
Chris Winkler later grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Finn, and putting SVC up by a 3-0 margin after a half inning.
Malone was solid on the hill, scattering just four hits through the first four innings as the lead remained 3-0.
However, in the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers scored four times on four hits, capitalizing on a pair of SVC errors to take a 4-3 lead. They added another unearned run in the seventh.
SVC tried to rally in the 9th, when pinch-hitter
Ramon Milke drew a leadoff walk.  After a pair of fielders' choices left the Bearcats down to their final out with just a runner at first, Mahon drew a walk, then both runners moved up on a wild pitch.  However, a popout ended the game with the tying run at second.
Malone (0-1) worked 7 innings, yielding just one earned run, taking the hard-luck loss.  Morrone was 3-for-5 at the plate, while McElfish, a junior transfer, was 2-4 in his first Bearcat start.
Saint Vincent is now 2-2 on the season, and will face Coe College of Iowa on Thursday (March 9) at 2:45PM in Auburndale, Florida.
