Fielding woes continued to plague the Bearcats as they gave up 10 unearned runs en route to a 15-5 loss to Coe College in Auburndale, Florida.
Coe's first batter of the game reached on a Bearcat error, then stole second. Â The throw from the catcher went into center field, moving the runner to third. Â He then scored on a groundout to make it 1-0. Â Before the top of the first had ended, the Kohawks had tallied four runs on four hits, putting the Bearcats in an early hole.
Saint Vincent cut the deficit in half in the third, as
Parker Janosko led off with a double over the right fielder's head. Â
Matt Morrone attempted to bunt Janosko to third, and the pitcher attempted to throw Janosko out at third but threw the ball away, allowing the run to score and Morrone to reach second. Â
Greg Martin later doubled home Morrone to make it a 4-2 game.
Coe got a run on a solo home run in the top of the fourth to extend the lead to three, but SVC got a run back in the bottom of the inning. Â
TJ Kuny walked to lead off then moved to second on a
Chris Winkler groundout. Â After Janosko was hit by a pitch, Morrone doubled down the right field line to score Kuny.
The Kohawks then added three runs in the fifth to break the game open, then scored six runs - 5 unearned - in the top of the 8th to put the game away.
Fred Gillespie started and took the loss for the Bearcats, working four innings but giving up just one earned run. Â He walked none and struck out two.
Nick LaCava pitched well in relief, throwing two innings and yielding just one unearned run.  Morrone led the offense, going 3-for-4, while
Bobby Finn had a pair of hits.
SVC will be back in action on Friday (March 10) at 9AM, facing Nebraska Wesleyan in Winter Haven, Florida.
