Bearcats, Lions split non-conference games

The Saint Vincent Bearcats and the Penn State-Altoona Lions split a non-conference doubleheader in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

The hosts won game one by a 17-6 tally, before the Bearcats came back to claim game two, 8-5.

In game one, the Lions opened an early 8-0 lead and the Bearcats were never able to recover.  SVC got two runs in the top of the third, scoring when Tanner Yard was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and on a sacrifice fly by Parker Janosko.

Down 10-2 in the fourth, the Bearcats tallied three runs.  Eddie Kilkeary was hit by a pitch, then scored after the next three batters drew walks.  Pinch-hitter TJ Kuny hit into a fielder's choice that scored another run, and after another walk reloaded the bases, Bobby Finn drew the fifth walk of the inning, bringing in another run.  After an error brought home a run in the fifth to make the score 10-6, the Bearcats were unable to get any closer, then gave up seven late runs.

Blaine Crawford (0-1) started and took the loss, while offensively SVC had just five hits.

In game two, SVC got on the board in the top of the second.  After Braden Hoffer reached on an error to start the inning, he stole second and moved to third on a groundout.  Patrick Uland was hit by a pitch, then with Ryan Rojtas at the plate, Uland took off for second on a designed, delayed steal.  He managed to stay alive in a rundown long enough for Hoffer to score, giving SVC the 1-0 lead.

After the hosts tied the game in the bottom of the second, SVC rallied in the fourth. Finn reached on an error to lead off, then moved to second on a single by Kuny.  Hoffer then turned an attempted sacrifice bunt attempt into a single, loading the bases.  Josh Reist responded with a 2-run single, giving SVC a 3-1 lead.  Uland then reached on an error that scored Hoffer.  A Rojtas single later scored Reist, and a Stone Holtman squeeze bunt plated Uland with the Bearcats' sixth run of the game.

The Lions got a pair of runs back in the fifth, but SVC answered right back.  Rojtas reached on an infield single to lead off, and Holtzman followed with a single.  A sacrifice fly by Finn later scored Rojtas.  Janosko, who replaced Holtzman at first after a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on a single by Kuny, making the score 8-3.

After a lengthy delay for lightning, Penn State added a pair of late runs, but Shane Fajt worked a scoreless 7th inning for his first collegiate save.

Jarrett Noel (1-0) started and earned the win for the Bearcats, working four innings, giving up 3 walks and striking out two.  Matt Whittaker pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Rojtas, Finn and Kuny each had a pair of hits.

Saint Vincent is now 13-15 on the season, while Altoona is 13-16.  The Bearcats return to action on Friday in a single, 9-inning conference game on the road at Waynesburg.
