The Saint Vincent baseball team lost to Bethany College on the road in West Virginia by a score of 5-1 in the opening game of a conference doubleheader then bounced back for a 7-3 win in the nightcap.
Dave Culeton (2-3) took the loss in game one, while the team was unable to generate much offense. Â SVC had just three hits, including a solo home run by
Greg Martin.
Culeton gave up five runs, three earned, working into the 5th inning of the 7-inning contest.  Matt Whitaker worked 1/3 of an inning, while
Ben Davis threw a scoreless 1 1/3 for Saint Vincent.  Martin had two hits, while
Bobby Finn had the other Bearcat single off Bethany's Tyler Alworth, who went the distance for the win.
In game two,
Jimmy Malone picked up his fourth win of the season (4-1), working into the sixth inning and giving up just two earned runs.
Dylan Pietrantoni worked 1 1/3 scoreless in relief.
SVC took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, when
Patrick McElfish singled with one out and moved to third on an
Eddie Kilkeary double. Â
Ramon Milke singled home both runners to put the Bearcats in front. Â
The hosts came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, but the bats came back to life for SVC in the top of the third. Â
Tanner Yard singled to lead off, then moved up when
Chris Winkler drew a walk. Â After both runners moved up on a passed ball,
TJ Kuny hit a sacrifice fly that plated Yard with the go-ahead run. Â Martin then singled home Winkler to make it a 4-2 game. Â After a single from Kilkeary, Milke again came through, this time with an RBI double. Â
Brennan Hoffer then singled home two runs to give SVC a 7-2 lead, more than enough for Malone, who walked three and struck out two.
Saint Vincent is now 5-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, 9-10 overall. Â SVC and Bethany will play a 9-inning game in Latrobe on Sunday (April 9) at 2PM. Â
