The Saint Vincent men's bowling team made its long awaited return to action in the Warrior Classic, hosted by Rochester University in Troy, Michigan. The varsity team finished sixth out of 10 teams, while the JV team took first place among a field of five.
It was the first official competition for Saint Vincent in men's bowling since 1982. The team made its return last season, but the schedule was shortened to just two exhibition events due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The varsity team struggled in the early part of the day in its debut, averaging just 171 over the first two team games. However, in games three and four, the Bearcats averaged over 188 to start to work their way up the standings.
Sophomore
Alex Colecchia led the way, finishing 14th among the field of more than 65, with an average of 199. Junior
Eddie Zuzak was 21st, at 191, while junior transfer
Josh Marks was 24th, averaging 187.5.
Zuzak had the highest individual game of the afternoon for the varsity (235), while Colecchia added a 233 and Marks had a 220 game.
Up next were four blocks of 4 Baker team games each, and SVC again struggled at the outset, averaging just 174 over the first 8 games. However, in the third block, the Bearcats put it all together, shooting an 886 series (221.5 average), the highest of the day among all teams. The final block average of 184.5 left the Bearcats with a 184 team average on the day and a total score of 6613, just 17 pins away from fifth.
The Bearcat JV team, while finishing first among a field of five squads, turned in a 7th place overall performance among the 15 teams entered. Freshman
Brandon Dunmire led the way with a four-game series of 781 (195.5 average), good for 17
th overall among all bowlers. Classmate
Nathan Horton was 22nd, with an average of 187.7, while another freshman,
Dominick Spence, was third at 185.2.
Dunmire had the highest game of the afternoon for the Bearcats (239), while Horton reached the 200 mark twice (222, 200).
The squad averaged 181 on the day overall, not far off the mark set by the varsity.
SVC will be back in action on October 2, as the team travels to Columbus for the opening event of the Ohio Bowling Conference season.
