LATROBE, Pa. (Nov. 14) – On Tuesday evening, wrestling returned to Saint Vincent College for the first time in 50 years, with the reborn Bearcats hosting Penn State-Behrend in front of a standing-room-only crowd at the Robert S. Carey Student Center.
In the back-and-forth non-conference dual match, the Lions won three of the final four matches to pull out the 26-17 victory.
The teams traded victories over the first six matches of the evening. Saint Vincent's first win was earned by freshman
Ryan Klingensmith, who took the 133-pound match in dominant fashion with a 20-3 tech fall to put the Bearcats in front 5-3.
At 149,
Tyler Debnar gave SVC an 8-7 lead with a 10-3 decision, before 165-pounder
Chase Brandebura earned a 14-7 decision to again give SVC a one-point lead, 11-10.
The Lions would then seal the victory with three straight wins at 174, 184 and 197, but SVC senior 285-pounder
Jake Beistel posted an impressive victory in the evening's final match, needing just 41 seconds to score a pin and whip the crowd into a frenzy.
Saint Vincent will now have a three-week layoff before returning to action on Dec. 8, when it travels south to take on Division II Wheeling University.
