ADRIAN, Mich. (Nov. 4) – On Saturday morning, the Saint Vincent College wrestling team competed for the first time in 50 years, taking part in the season-opening Adrian College Invitational.
Saint Vincent saw a pair of wrestlers earn top-five finishes, while three placed in the top seven, as the Bearcats placed seventh in the varsity team standings.
The Bearcats' top two individual performances were turned in by a pair of freshmen, with
Sean Cain placing fifth at 125 pounds, and
Ryan Klingensmith fifth at 133.
Cain bounced back from an opening round defeat to close with a pair of victories. In the consolation round, he earned a 19-4 tech fall win against Heidelberg's Brandon Yob, before taking the fifth-place match with a 17-3 major decision over Ohio Wesleyan's Chase Wolfinberger.
Klingensmith opened his action by posting a pair of falls, first taking down Adrian's Mack Baird in 3:58, and then Alejandro Velasco of Wabash in 2:05. He would then recover from a pair of close decisions to earn a 14-1 major decision over Wabash's Laban Green in the fifth-place match.
Tyler Debnar won a pair of matches to place seventh in the 141-pound bracket, earning a fall at 1:24 in the first consolation round before earning a 3-0 decision in the seventh-place match over Heidleberg's Michael Hatgas.
With a 3-0 decision over Heidelberg's Claude Buckmaster,
Liam Flanigan earned seventh place in the 149-pound bracket, while
George Noutai won the seventh-place match at 174 pounds with a fall in 40 seconds.
Chase Brandebura also picked up his first collegiate victory, with the rookie earning a 12-4 major decision over John Conover from Case Western Reserve in the 165-pound consolations.
Following a weeklong layoff, the Bearcats will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 11, making the short trek south to take part in the Washington & Jefferson Invitational, which begins at 9 a.m.
