Baseball drops pitcher's duel in Virginia

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Mar. 18)- The Saint Vincent baseball team continued their four-game series with the Apprentice School on Saturday afternoon, where the Bearcats were defeated by the Builders 3-2 after a ninth inning walk-off.

Casey Jones tossed another strong performance for the Bearcats on the mound. Jones took the no decision, tossing 7.1 innings, giving up just two earned runs on seven hits, striking out five batters and walking two batters in the loss.

Alex Polito took the loss in relief, giving up one run on three walks in his one inning of work for the Bearcats. Jacob Hess also tossed 0.1 innings in relief, giving up one hit and striking out one batter for SVC.

Despite the offensive struggles in the game for SVC, Billy Perroz picked up right where he left off yesterday. Perroz recorded two of the Bearcats four hits, including a first-inning RBI single for Saint Vincent. Dylan Schmude and Tristan Bedillion recorded the other two hits for Saint Vincent in the loss.

Bedillion along with Owen Kitts scored the only two runs of the game for Saint Vincent in the game.

After a groundout to start the game for Saint Vincent Kitts walked and Bedillion followed with a single as SVC was in business with runners on first and second with just one out. Perroz followed with his RBI single, scoring Kitts as SVC took the early 1-0 lead.

VonStein followed Perroz's single, reaching on a throwing error, which allowed Bedillion to score as Saint Vincent took a 2-0 lead. Despite SVC having two runners in scoring position with less than the two outs the Builders escaped trouble holding SVC to just the two runs in the inning.

Over the next three and a half innings the pitcher's duel was in full effect as neither the Bearcats nor the Builders plated any runs as Saint Vincent still held a 2-0 lead heading into the fifth inning.

After the Bearcats were set down in order in the top half of the fifth inning, the Apprentice School got on the board in the bottom half of the inning. The Builders cut the Bearcats lead in half after an RBI single, making the score 2-1 still in the Bearcats favor.

The Apprentice School threatened to score more in the inning, but the Bearcats held them in check as SVC still held their lead at 2-1 at the end of the inning.

Jones was dominant for the Bearcats in the next couple of innings, just as he had been all day, shutting out the Builders in the sixth and seventh innings as the game headed to the eighth, still with the Bearcats ahead 2-1.

In the eighth inning, Saint Vincent was once again set down in order, but the Builders tied it up in the bottom half of the inning. The Apprentice School scored on an RBI double to tie the game up at 2-2 heading into the ninth inning.

The SVC offense remained stagnant in the ninth as they went down 1-2-3 for the second straight inning. In the bottom of the ninth the Builders got a couple of guys on base and won it on a single that just got through the left side hole, pulling out the 3-2 walk-off win.

The Bearcats line on the day was two runs on four hits, while making zero errors. The Apprentice School scored three runs on eight hits, making one error in the contest.

Saint Vincent will close out their four-game series with the Apprentice School with a single nine-inning game tomorrow, Sunday, March 19. First pitch for the finale is scheduled for 12 noon at War Memorial Stadium in Newport News, Virginia.
