LATROBE, Pa. (Jan. 11) – The Saint Vincent College wrestling team earned its first ever Presidents' Athletic Conference dual victory, downing visiting Waynesburg University by a 34-18 score in a packed Robert S. Carey Student Center.
The Bearcats (2-6, 1-0 PAC) opened the evening with a quick 12-0 lead after
Sean Cain (125 pounds) and
Kyle McCollum (133) earned forfeit victories.
In the first true match of the night, rookie 149-pounder
Tyler Debnar earned his fifth pin of the season, dispatching Waynesburg's J.T. Hollyfield in 2:19 to up the SVC lead to 18-0.
Saint Vincent's lead grew to 20-5 when freshman
Charlie Mesich earned a 16-5 major decision over Waynesburg's Andrew Johnson in the 157-pound match, before 165-pounder
Chase Brandebura pinned Jarvis Thomas in 2:17 to open up a 28-5 lead for the Bearcats.
The Yellow Jackets picked up three straight wins at 174, 184 and 197 to close the cap to 28-18, before the Bearcats'
Jake Beistel won by injury default over Jaron Polk in the 285-pound match to improve to 6-1 on the season and close out the SVC victory.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 17, traveling south to take on PAC foe Washington & Jefferson at 7 p.m.
