LATROBE, Pa. (Nov. 12)- The Saint Vincent wrestling team fell to Shippensburg by a score of 34-14 in the Bearcats season 2024-25 season opener on Tuesday night.
Long time Saint Vincent Head Wrestling Coach and supporter of the Bearcats Tom "Legs" Harbert was honored prior to the match with a mat dedication ceremony hosted by the College in honor of Harbert.
It was a great start to the night for the Bearcats (0-1) immediately after the ceremony took place. Saint Vincent earned the first three wins in the match, winning at the 125, 133, and 141-pound weight classes to open the evening with a 14-0 advantage.
To open the season,
Ryan Klingensmith earned a major decision victory at the 125-pound weight class over Shippensburg's Noah Gilgore. Klingensmith's major decision victory came after he posted a 15-7 defeat over Gilgore, putting SVC up 4-0 in the match.
Kyle McCollum followed Klingensmith's victory with a technical fall victory at the 133-pound weight class. McCollum's win came by a score of 23-5 to earn the tech. fall win over the Raiders' AJ Stayton, increasing the Bearcats lead to 9-0.
The Bearcats lead increased to 14-0 after
Ryan Yocum earned a 19-3 tech. fall victory over Calvin Lederer in the 141-pound weight class.
Shippensburg went on to win the next seven weight classes, four of which came via pinfall, two coming on decisions, and one major decision as well as the Raiders' won 34-14.
The Bearcats closest match in those final seven weight classes came in the 184-pound weight class. In his collegiate debut,
Nathan Barkley was slighted defeated by Cole Lang of Shippensburg by a 13-12 margin.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Wednesday, November 20, traveling to Penn State-Behrend for a non-conference match. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. next Wednesday night in Erie.
