The Saint Vincent women's bowling team went 5-0 on the day, and captured first place in the Br. Pat Lacey Memorial Tournament, held at Lincoln Lanes in Latrobe.
SVC trailed entering the final frame in two matches, including the championship game, and managed to fight back to win.
The team opened the day with a matchup against Hilbert College. The game was close throughout, but the Bearcats grabbed the lead in the seventh frame and pulled away late to an 852-784 win. Freshman
Skyy Nicholls led the way with a 190, while
Jackie Koehler added a 178.
In game two, SVC squared off against Pitt-Bradford, and the visitors jumped out to a 30-pin lead after the first three frames. As the teams entered the 10th frame, UPB held a 35-pin advantage and appeared to have the Bearcats on the verge of a loss. Monique Koeler threw strikes on her first two shots to cut the gap to 25, and Bradford missed key shots and bring SVC closer.Â
Abby Justice threw a strike on her first shot in the 10th, giving her three consecutive strikes, to give SVC the lead. In the end, it was an 85-pin turnaround in the final frame, as Saint Vincent won by a score of 912-862. Justice (212) and
Monique Koehler (203) had the top scores.
The third game was a matchup between SVC and Penn State-Altoona, and the Bearcats led from start to finish, winning by a score of 924-764.Â
Daphne Stuber's 203 was tops, while
Jackie Koehler added a 199, and Justice shot 187.
Game four was the final opportunity to set the seedings for the final championship round, which was based on total pins. 9th-ranked SVC faced #12 Daemen University, and the Wildcats entered with a 37-pin lead in total pins for the day. Daemen started strong, opening a 30-pin lead after three frames, but SVC slowly cut into the margin, tying the game in the 7th frame. Saint Vincent once again managed to pull away late, winning 866-798, moving to 4-0 on the day and earning the #1 seed in the finals.
Daemen was second in total pins after four games, setting up an instant rematch in the championship game, which was also a rematch of last year's title game in the same tournament.
The Bearcats got off to a good start, leading by 30 pins after four frames, but the Wildcats stormed back and took the lead in the 7th frame. As the 10th frame started, the Bearcats trailed by 25, but
Monique Koehler, who had thrown a strike in the 9th frame, added another on her first shot in the 10th.Â
Sabine Strickland, who had also struck in the 9th, added two strikes in the 10th to make it an even match. Daemen missed a spare then threw a split, opening the door for Saint Vincent.Â
Jackie Koehler then stepped up and threw two strikes in the 10th, as did Nicholls, lifting SVC to an 895-846 win and the tournament title.
Individually, Nicholls was named to the All-Tournament team, finishing second overall and averaging 192.8. Justice (177.1), Strickland (176.4),
Monique Koehler (175.7),
Jackie Koehler (174.6) and Stuber (173.5) rounded out a balanced scoresheet for Saint Vincent, which averaged 178 as a team. Â
Prior to the tournament, the Bearcats honored their two graduating seniors, Monique and
Jackie Koehler. Both have been two-time All-Conference First Team selections and, through today, have been part of teams that have won 155 games, against just 34 losses.
With a 5-0 record on the day, the Bearcats are now 57-11 on the season. The 57 wins represent a new school record for wins in a season. The team will return to action on Saturday, February 24 when they look to defend their title in the Unicorn Invitational, hosted by La Roche University.
