NORTH BOSTON, N.Y. (March 11) -- Two members of the Saint Vincent College men's volleyball team have earned weekly accolades from the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
The Bearcats swept the AMCC weekly awards, with sophomore outside/right side hitter
Shawn McSwiggen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) named the league's Offensive Player of the Week, and freshman middle hitter
Rocco Marino (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) earning AMCC Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
McSwiggen had a monster performance in the Bearcats' 3-2 win over AMCC rival Thiel on Friday evening, recording 29 kills on a .343 hitting percentage, while also totaling 20 digs and two blocks. The 29 kills are tied for the fifth-most in a five-set match by a Division III player this season, while it marked McSwiggen's third match with 20-plus kills on the season. A day later, in a 4-set loss to Arcadia, McSwiggen totaled eight kills, seven digs, and one block. McSwiggen currently leads the AMCC with an average of 3.82 kills per set, while he is third in the conference with 26 service aces and fourth in hitting percentage (.278).
Marino also had a big performance in the win at Thiel, posting a career-high nine blocks (2 solo/7 ast), the second-most in a match in Saint Vincent program history, and the third-most in a match in NCAA Division III this season. A day later in a non-conference tri-match, Marino went for six kills and five blocks in a 3-1 loss to Arcadia, before closing the week with five kills and one block in a 3-0 win over host Hood. The rookie middle hitter ranks eight in the AMCC with 44 total blocks.
McSwiggen, Marino, and the Bearcats face a busy week ahead, traveling to AMCC foe Carlow University on Wednesday night, before hosting a tri-match a day later with Wells College and Bethany College. Saint Vincent enters the week with an 11-7 overall record, and are tied atop the AMCC standings with a perfect 3-0 conference record.Â
