The Saint Vincent women's bowling season came to an end with a pair of losses in the double-elimination Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships.
After winning their second round match on Friday, the Bearcats opened Saturday's action with a winners-bracket matchup against William Smith College. Things started well for SVC, jumping out to a 30-pin lead after four frames, thanks in part to three consecutive strikes from freshman
Skyy Nicholls. However, the Herons fought back, tying the score after six frames. From there, it was all William Smith, as they pulled away to a 997-890 win.Â
Abby Justice led the way for SVC with a 196 game, while
Sabine Strickland added a 194, and
Jackie Koehler finished with a 185. Â
Down 1-0 in the best-of-three set, the Bearcats then battled the Herons in a five-game Baker team set. SVC fell behind early, dropping the first game 211-182, but threw 8 strikes in game two, en route to a 214-182 win to take a 3-pin lead in the series. The lead was extended to 12 with a 177-168 win in game three. SVC was strong again in game four, winning 204-189, then won game five by a 172-136 margin, winning the match by a score of 947-884.
With the match tied 1-1, it forced a best-of-7 Baker set to determine the winner. Saint Vincent got off to a slow start, dropping the first two games. SVC had the early lead in game three, but WSC fought back to win 195-176 to take a 3-0 lead. Facing their last chance, the Bearcats won the fourth game, 166-154, then made it 3-2 with a 188-180 win in the fifth game. The Bearcats threw a strong game 6, shooting 194, but the Herons threw five consecutive strikes to erase an early SVC lead, winning 214-194 to win the match and advance to the championship round.
Saint Vincent then faced Alvernia University in an elimination match, but the Bearcats were unable to generate momentum at the start. Alvernia took the lead in the second frame and opened a 30-pin lead after four frames. SVC came back to tie the match in the fifth, but Alvernia threw several strikes to regain the lead, then continued to build the advantage. SVC finished strong, but Alvernia won the game 971-923.Â
Jackie Koehler's 224 was the top score, while Nicholls added a 202.
Facing elimination, SVC needed a win in the five-game total pins Baker set, but three splits in the first game put SVC in a tough spot early, falling 171-135. Three more open frames in game two allowed Alvernia to win 173-162, giving them a 47-pin advantage. SVC won the third game by a 202-188 score, to cut the gap to 33, but SVC's 223 in the fourth game was no match for AU's 244, and the margin was too much to overcome. SVC seniors
Monique Koehler and
Jackie Koehler threw strikes in frames 9 and 10 of their final game, but Alvernia won the Baker set by a score of 987-891. Alvernia will face William Smith on Sunday in the tournament championship.
For the weekend, SVC averaged 181.1, slightly higher than their regular season average. Freshman
Daphne Stuber, whose 230 was the Bearcats' highest single game of the weekend, was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Bearcats finish the season with a record of 64-14, the highest number of wins in a single season in program history. Â
