HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 11)- The Saint Vincent wrestling team concluded the two-day Virginia Duals Torunament with two consecutive wins.
On the opening day of the tournament, the Bearcats fell twice to tough competition. In their first match of the day on Friday, the Bearcats fell to Elizabethtown. In the match,
Tyler Debnar earned a 13-2 major decision, while
Nathan Barkley picked up a pin at 174 lbs. and
Ryan Weinzen also picked up a victory with an 18-3 technical fall win.
The Bearcats then fell in a slight 24-21 loss to Marymount. At 133 lbs.,
Kyle McCollum earned a 6-3 decision, while
Liam Flanigan followed with a 14-6 major decision to put Saint Vincent in the lead.
Anthony Orlandini followed by increasing that lead with a 4-2 decision at 149 lbs. After a loss at 157 lbs., Saint Vincent picked up two consecutive victories.
Chase Brandebura earned a 19-4 technical fall and Barkley followed with his second win of the tournament with a pin at 6:14. The Bearcats fell in the final three matches to fall in the match.
Saint Vincent responded in a big way on day two of the tournament. First, the Bearcats earned an impressive 42-11 win against Buena Vista.
After dropping the first weight class, SVC won the next eight weight classes. Three of those eight wins came by fall as Debnar, Brandebura, and Weinzen all picked up pins.
Dakota McDermott and
Owen Caracciolo both picked up major decisions, while
Ryan Yocum and
Logan Bechtold both picked up tech. falls.
Barkley also picked up a win by forfeit in the match to help the Bearcats cruise to the win.
SVC concluded the tournament with an impressive 41-16 win against Division-II foe Davis and Elkins. Samuel Snyder started the match out with a win at 125 lbs., earning a 15-0 tech. fall. After Davis and Elkins picked up a pin and the lead, the Bearcats went into cruise control, winning the next four matches. Three of those four wins came by pin by Yocum,
Tyler Clark, and Bechtold, followed by a forfeit victory for the Bearcats at 165 lbs.
Saint Vincent won two of the final three matches as well. Weinzen earned a fall at 2:07 at 184 lbs. and
Christo Marion picked up a forfeit win at heavyweight.
The Bearcats return to action Thursday, January 16, traveling to Waynesburg. The match is expected to begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
