WESTERN PA BAKER - TEAM RESULTS
The Saint Vincent women's bowling team earned its fifth tournament victory of the season, capturing the Western PA Baker Shootout, held at New Great Valley Lanes in North Versailles, PA. The win completed another strong weekend for the team, following a second place finish in the Greater Pittsburgh Collegiate Classic. Both events featured a field of 11 colleges.
GREATER PITTSBURGH COLLEGIATE CLASSIC
The Bearcats placed two bowlers on the All-Tournament Team, but fell eight pins short over six rounds of competition, finishing second to Shawnee State University, 4927 to 4919 pins.
SVC took the early lead with a 929 team game (185.8 average) to open the day, led by
Savannah Douglass's 198 game.
Kaylie Kurland added a 195. In the second round, the Bearcats bounced back from a slow start to shoot a 915 game.
Skyy Nicholls (206) and
Lilly Houle (190) had the top scores.
In the final Traditional game of the day, SVC recorded a 943 team score, with two bowlers topping the 200 mark:
Mareana Pilyih (215) and Nicholls (211).
The final three rounds consisted of four Baker team games each, and the Bearcats got off to a very slow start in the opening round, allowing Shawnee State to come from a 90-pin deficit to take nearly a 100-pin lead. SVC bounced back in the second round, which included games of 225 and 224, to cut the margin to 25 pins going into the final round. In the end, it came down to the final frame, with the Shanwee State anchor, Onesti Evans, needing to convert a spare for the tournament win. Her successful spare attempt allowed the Bears to hang on for the narrow victory.
Individually, Nicholls finished second among the field of 73 bowlers in traditional play with a 197.6 average, while Douglass was fifth at 191.6. Both were named to the All-Tournament Team. Pilyih was seventh (190.6). In Baker play, Houle led the way with an average of 206.3, followed by Pilyih (192.1).
WESTERN PA BAKER SHOOTOUT
Saint Vincent led from start to finish in the Western PA Baker Shootout, taking the lead after the first of seven rounds consisting of four Baker games each, and widening the advantage on the field throughout the afternoon. By the end of the tournament, the Bearcats led second place Shawnee State by nearly 400 total pins, or nearly 15 pins per game.
On the day, the Bearcats were led by Nicholls, with an average of 201.2, followed by Kurland (190.1). Rounding out the top-five for the Bearcats were Houle (187.1),
Brooke Street (184.1) and Pilyih (181.8).
SVC will return to action on Sunday, February 1, in a tri-match against Penn State-Behrend and Pitt-Greensburg at Main Bowl in Greensburg, PA.
