Lady Bearcats edged by Bobcats

The Lady Bearcats were defeated 2-1 by Frostburg State on the chilly, rainy Saint Vincent Turf.

Saint Vincent out-shot the Bobcats 17-15, but the Lady Bearcats were unable to recover from a 2-0 deficit midway early on in the second half.

Despite owning a 12-7 advantage in shots over the first half, the Bobcats went into the intermission ahead 1-0, on a breakaway goal from Breanne Russell in the game's 24th minute.

Russell got her team off to a good start in the second half as well, scoring her second of the afternoon on a tip-in in front to make the score 2-0 with 29 minutes remaining in regulation.

SVC then got on the board, with freshman Kayla Howard knocking home a rebound from teammate Ashley Williams, cutting the deficit in half with 26:44 left to play.

Both teams had a number of scoring chances over the final 20 minutes, but neither team could find the net.  The Lady Bearcat defense withstood a barrage of six FSU corners between the game's 55th and 59th minutes, while Frostburg was able to turn away five SVC shots over the final 12 minutes.

Bridget Harner played all 70 minutes in goal for SVC, finishing with seven saves in the losing effort.  Frostburg's Maggie Edwards made 11 saves for the win.

The defeat drops SVC's record to 2-8 on the year.  The team will remain at home for its next game, as the Lady Bearcats take on Division-II Limestone College at 11am on Sunday on the SVC Turf.
