The Lady Bearcats were defeated in their 2010 home opener 9-0 by visiting Seton Hill University, ranked ninth in NCAA Division-II.
The visiting Griffins took an early 1-0 lead just 37 seconds into play, when Allegra Ramos knocked in a ball from the doorstep.
Seton Hill continued on the attack throughout the first half, but the SVC defense was strong, blanking the Griffins for the rest of the way despite surrendering 17 first half shots. Goalie
Megan Vargo made eight saves over the first 35 minutes.
As was the case in the first half, Seton Hill got off to a strong start in the second stanza, with Janelle Hoffer scoring just over three minutes into play. The floodgates then opened, as the Griffins scored seven goals over the final 22 minutes of regulation, including three goals in the final four minutes.
For the game, Seton Hill owned a 36-4 advantage in shots, and took 17 penalty corners. Vargo finished the afternoon with 17 saves in the losing effort, a career high.
The defeat drops SVC's record to 0-4 on the season, and the team will now enjoy a six-day layoff before returning to action next Wednesday, when they host Washington & Jefferson College at 5pm on the Saint Vincent Turf.
