The Saint Vincent field hockey team was defeated 5-0 by Oberlin College in the 2011 season opener, played under the lights on the SVC Turf.
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Bearcats saw the visitors score four times in a 25 minute span in the second half to cruise to the win.
The game remained scoreless for the first 30 minutes of play, thanks to a strong effort by the Bearcat defense, as it withstood 12 penalty corners and nine shots. Oberlin would eventually open the scoring with just over four minutes left in the half, on a tip-in goal by Emily Whitaker. Saint Vincent looked poised to tie the game in the closing seconds of the half, but
Kasara Nee was stopped twice on the doorstep with 40 seconds left to keep the score at 1-0.
Oberlin maintained offensive pressure in the early stages of the second half, and despite four saves from SVC goalie
Bridget Harner, and a defensive save by
Michelle Allemang, the Yeowomen made the score 2-0 on a rebound goal by Karin Yoshida with 28:35 left in regulation.
The visitors then erupted for a pair of goals in a 50-second span, first from Whitaker and then from Yoshida, to take a 4-0 advantage with 11:55 left to play. Yoshida's third goal of the day, with 1:19 left, would close out the scoring for the Yeowomen.
For the game, Oberlin owned a 24-7 advantage in shots, with the Bearcats' Harner turning in a career-high 11-save performance.
The Bearcats (0-1) will now face a quick turnaround before returning to action on Friday night, facing Sweet Briar College in the opening game of a tournament hosted by Earlham College (IN).
